In one of the most exciting finishes ever witnessed at the Breeders Cup in its 39 years on the calendar, the Distaff was decided in a three-way photo, with 5-2 second-choice Malathaat getting the verdict by a nose that was more like a whisker. Here’s the 2022 Breeders Cup Distaff Recap!

Before the gates opened the race looked like one of the best of the weekend and it certainly lived up to its billing. Society and then Secret Oath set a searching gallop but all the action was in behind, with the first three home the last three after half a mile.
The race lit up in the last furlong. The longshot Blue Stripe drove to the lead but on the rail, Clairiere was laying down a sustained challenge, while down the outside Malathaat was finishing off like a runaway train under the veteran John Velazquez.
The three flashed under the wire together, and even after several different slow-motion angles, it was practically impossible to split them.
Then the announcement came: Malathaat by a nose from Blue Stripe by a nose from Clairiere. The time was 1:49 and changed; the favorite Nest was fourth.
The finish was reminiscent of the never-to-be-forgotten 1988 Distaff won by the all-time great Personal Ensign, and although Malathaat can’t honestly be compared to that unbeaten icon, their names may well be linked forever now.

Malathaat, trained by Todd Pletcher and third in last year’s Distaff, is now ten-for-14 and never off the board, and looks certain to win divisional honors at the Eclipse Awards.
