The Breeders Cup Dirt Mile is a one mile (8f) for thoroughbred horses three years old and up, this race is part of the Breeders’ Cup World Championship, its run on the dirt or in the case of Woodbine they ran on a synthetic surface. The race offers a $1,0000,00 purse.
The race was run for the first time in Monmouth Park in 2007 as a grade 2 during the first day of the Breeders Cup card, two years later became a grade 1 event. Various tracks configuration requires minor changes, in the 2007 running they went 1 mile 70 yards and in 2015 the Breeders’ Cup held at Keeneland Race Course, which does not regularly hold one mile dirt races, in order to get the right distance, the starting gate was set 70 yards in front of the one-mile pole.
Last years winner was Life is Good who scored a decisive front running 5 ¾ length victory and winning his first G1 event. Life is Good was saddled by Todd Pletcher but earlier in the year, he was in the Bob Baffert barn and was the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby until chips in his ankle sidelined him and he eventually ended up in New York with Pletcher.
Horses can qualify for the event either through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “win and Your in” or through a selection process. If there are more than 14 nominees (oversubscribed), the BC Challenge Series winners will get spots and the next seven are determined by points based on the following formula. Win, place and show horses in Grade I stakes earn ten, six and four points, respectively. The top three finishers in Grade II stakes earn six, four and two points respectively, and in Grade III races the points earned are four, two and one, respectively.
RACE QUALITY | WIN | PLACE | SHOW |
Grade 1 | 10 | 6 | 4 |
Grade 2 | 6 | 4 | 2 |
Grade 3 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
The horses remaining after the BC Challenge winners and and 7 entries based on points will be ranked in order of preference by the Panel. The Panel will be free to establish its own criteria or ranking, so that high-quality horses of demonstrated ability will have the opportunity to participate in Championship Races regardless of earlier participation in graded events.
Beginning in 2007, the Breeders’ Cup developed the Breeders’ Cup Challenge a series of races that allow the winning horse to get an automatic berth into the 14 divisions that exist. These automatic berths are known as Win and You’re In
In the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile division, the numbers of runners are limited to 12 horses. The current 2022 Win and You’re In races are:
