Rattle still on a roll

It will take more than a bad trip to stop Rattle N Roll in his current mood, as he rose above trouble in running to complete a hat-trick in the Blame at Churchill Downs on Saturday, powering home from Call Me Fast and Happy American.

The 8-5 favorite was trapped in a tight pocket on the fence at the top of the lane and had a lot to do as Call Me Fast skipped three lengths clear, but as soon as Rattle N Roll saw daylight he quickened smartly for Brian Hernandez and ran down the leader with room to spare. He won going away by a length and a quarter, with three-quarters of a length between third-choice Call Me Fast and Happy American.

“He’s a great horse to be around,” said trainer Kenny McPeek, who brought the colt back off just two weeks’ rest. “He eats well and enjoys his work and I’m proud of him.”

This was the third G3 win in three starts for Rattle N Roll following the Ben Ali at Keeneland and the Pimlico Special, and it’s possible he’ll get an upgrade for the $1m G1 Stephen Foster at Ellis Park – which has been switched from Churchill Downs, as the racecourse has now been temporarily shuttered owing to concerns with the racing surface – on July 1.

Set Piece follows the drill

Everyone loves a golden oldie and Set Piece went back to number one in the Arlington, the seven-year-old finishing off his race strongly to nail the longshots Get Smokin and Harlan Estate and make himself racing’s newest millionaire.

Bettors know what to expect from Set Piece, a slow start, and a fast finish and the 3-5 favorite was out the back early as Get Smokin set Sunday-stroll fractions on the lead. The front-runner was still there at the eighth pole, but Florent Geroux was winding up Set Piece for his closing flourish and he ran down the leader inside the final sixteenth to win by a length, with Harlan Estate coming along for the show spot three-quarters of a length back.

“We love this horse, he’s a barn favorite,” said trainer Brad Cox. “It’s really cool that he’s still very competitive at his age.”

Set Piece is now 12-for-27 in a career that began with three wins in Britain, and although he has never won at G1 level he may be given another chance in the $1m G1 Arlington Million, at its new home of Colonial Downs, on August 12.

Idiomatic a rising star

Half an hour earlier, the Cox-Geroux combination had made their first appearance of the day in the winner’s circle when Idiomatic broke through at Graded level in the Shawnee, going coast-to-coast to beat Sixtythreecaliber and Frost Point.

Her task was made easier by the late scratch of G1 winner Pauline’s Pearl, but Idiomatic kept it simple anyway. The 2-1 second-choice, like Set Piece a Juddmonte homebred, broke on top and was allowed her own way out front, parlaying a soft lead into a powerful stretch run that took her two and a half lengths clear at the wire. Sixtythreecaliber could never threaten but still had a length and a quarter to spare over the favorite Frost Point, who left her rally far too late.

Idiomatic has never been off the board in her life and now boasts a five-for-eight count, with this victory her first away from the synthetic surface at Turfway Park.

“The key was getting her back to two turns,” said Cox, who may now point the daughter of Curlin towards the G3 Delaware, over an extra furlong at Delaware Park, on July 8.

Mission accomplished

Normal service was resumed in the Regret, as the progressive Mission Of Joy bounced back with a career-best to claim her fourth victory in her last five starts, coming home a dominant winner from Papilio and Mrs. Astor.

The Kitten’s Joy filly had given up a three-race winning streak when beaten here a month ago but was made 3-5 favorite to put that right and did so with the minimum of fuss.

She sat in behind the pace until Tyler Gaffalione tipped her out at the top of the stretch and then produced a sizzling change of gear to put the race to bed, surging a length and a half clear of the rallying second-choice Papilio, with Mrs. Astor coming along late for third when the race was over, four lengths back. This was Mission Of Joy’s second success at G3 level following her score in the Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs.

“She impressed me today,” said trainer Graham Motion. “She’s Canadian-bred so we could target some of those races this summer, and she handled this distance well.”
