Spendarella has covered a lot of ground in just five starts, starting out in Florida and then traveling to Kentucky, then Britain, and now to California, where she made her G1 breakthrough with an impressive victory in the Del Mar Oaks on Saturday.

So easy for Spendarella G1, $300,000, 1m 1f turf, 3yo fillies

The fairytale continues for Spendarella, the belle of the ball in southern California on Saturday as she sizzled to her first G1 success in the Del Mar Oaks.

She relinquished her unbeaten record when second-best to the top-class Inspiral at Royal Ascot in June, but bounced right back on her return to action, the 6-5 favorite sitting behind the fractions set by Gracelund Grey and then Cairo Memories until moving smoothly to the lead at the top of the lane.

From there it was a procession, Spendarella drawing off under Tyler Gaffalione to win by four and a half lengths from the rallying second-choice Bellabel, with Cairo Memories sticking around for third, a length and a quarter away. The time was 1:47 and changed.

“We know she can go a mile-eighth now,” said Alice Clapham, assistant to trainer Graham Motion. “Tyler was so patient, he slipped in behind the leaders and found the sweet spot. When she kicked for home, it was incredible.”

Spendarella, a daughter of Karakontie who only made her debut in February, is now four-for-five, with her resume also featuring victories in the G3 Herecomesthebride and the G2 Appalachian.
