2022 Beresford Stakes & Goffs Million Recaps

On Saturday, a couple of alluring races took place at the Irish race course of Curragh, both open to two-year-olds. Crypto Force snatched up his 10 points towards the Kentucky Derby by scoring the 2022 Beresford Stakes in a great fashion, bettering the preferred Adelaide River. Subsequently, Galeron caused an upset in the €1,000,000 Goffs Million.

Beresford Stakes

The first points in the European road to the Kentucky Derby were distributed in this G2 race for two-year-olds who covered the distance of a mile on the turf surface.

The purse of €130,000 lured in a field of five, and even though Aidan O’Brien’s horses usually don’t like softer ground, Adelaide River (4-7) looked quite good from the beginning.

He set the pace and tried to draw clear from his rivals in the final stretch; however, Crypto Force (15-2) absolutely thrived on such a surface, swept by his opponent, and earned 10 points towards Kentucky Derby in 1m 44.30s.

The M D O’Callaghan bound colt galloped in last, yet his finish was so powerful that he easily improved his position to deliver by two and ¼ of a length. Piloted by Colin Keane, he bettered second Adelaide River, with Young Ireland (25-1) finishing third.

The victorious son of Time Test entered the Beresford Stakes picture after bagging his maiden in June, upon which he failed to impress at the Listed scene. However, everything went into his stride on Saturday, and the agile colt showed his back on Adelaide River, a much more robust rival whose performance was also a solid one.

Young Ireland took third place in front of Roaring Gallagher (9-2) and Lakota Seven (13-2).

Goffs Million

The rich purse of €1,000,000 attracted nineteen-two-year-olds into this turf race that quite easily became the wealthiest European event for juniors covering the distance of seven furlongs.

Like in the previous race, the favorite didn’t score here, too, because Galeron (16-1) caught all of his rivals off guard.

The Charles Hills trained colt in the second wave and waited for the final two furlongs, during which he improved his position and readied to give a powerful kick. Under Shane Foley, Galeron smoothly took command and then successfully resisted his rivals’ finish, and in the end, he held them off at least by half a length.

Galeron bagged the Goffs Million in 1m 26.30s, followed home by second Hellsing (5-1) and third Ramazan (14-1).

On the soft ground, respected Hellsing was always prominent and almost achieved the biggest win of his career; however, Galeron was simply too gusty to let go once he hit the front.

The son of Camacho aimed at the Goffs Million with five starts under the belt. He broke his maiden at the second attempt, but neither of his next Graded outings sparkled any interest in him.

Still, his fourth place in a Class 2 race in early September was a good one. Therefore, it’s possible Galeron really liked the longer distance and continued his progress on Saturday when bettering Hellsing, running another great race.

Unlike preferred Hiawatha (100-30), who didn’t have a single bright moment.
