Jack D'Or takes the 2023 Osaka Hai

Jack D’Or enhances his superstar reputation with a relentless gate-to-wire win and holds off the late challenge of the 2022 Japanese Oaks winner Stars On Earth.

Lord Derby Challenge

Grade 3 – Purse $585,000 – 1600 meters (1 mile) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Industria produces a power-packed finish to win his first graded stakes and takes his record to four career wins and over $800,000 in prize money earned.

As the gates fired open, two of the runners bobbled badly, including Taurus Gemini and the chalk Red Mon Reve and they were on the back foot from that point.

Meanwhile, up front it was Belenus and Mikki Briallante that quickly went clear of the field and the pace was lightning-fast. The eventual winner INDUSTRIA settled nicely in hand in the sixth spot, while second favorite Justin Cafe was locked away inside, around eight lengths off the lead.

The speed was relentless, and as they went down the backstretch and approached the far turn there were still twenty lengths separating the field, but the leader started to weaken and the field bunched up entering the stretch.

As they hit the top of the stretch run, Mikki Brillante swept to the front but Industria had the move covered and got to the lead 100 meters (a sixteenth) from the wire. Sonnig tried to go with the winner but had no answer, and he was passed close to the wire by Justin Cafe who closed late to take second.

The chalk Red Mon Reve is one to note, as he had to pitch into the eight lanes into the home stretch and closed rapidly to the wire, and was only beaten three lengths.

Osaka Hai Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $2,860,000 – 2000 meters (1 mile 2 furlongs) –  Turf – 4-Year-Olds

With one way of running, it was clear from the gates opening that Yutaka Take had one goal on the eventual winner JACK D’OR, and that was “catch me if you can” tactics. It was a risk with so many closers in the field, but was judged to perfection.

The winner went straight to the lead, and he was followed by North The World who had tracked across from the far outside gate, while Matenro Leo had a nice position in third on the inside rail.

Meanwhile, the chalk Stars On Earth was well back with another closer and fancied runner Geraldina. Up front, Take had just slowed the pace a little on the leader but was in full control in the box seat.

As they reached the end of the backstretch, it was here the leader was asked to widen and he quickly put two lengths on Danon The Kid who had moved into second. But now Christophe Lemaire had got the chalk loose and she was closing rapidly, but the wire came just in time for Jack D’Or who held on to win by a nose from Stars On Earth with Danon The Kid just a neck back in third.

Matenro Leo ran a great race and held well for the fourth spot.
