2022 Sprinters Stakes Recap

On Sunday, a prestigious event for sprinters took place at the Japan Racing in Nakayama. Three-year-old and older horses clashed there in the 2022 Sprinters Stakes, where seven-year-old Gendarme caused an upset when recording his premiere G1 success. We bring you the 2022 Sprinters Stakes Recap.

Sprinters Stakes

Sixteen three-year-old and older horses lined up in this G1 turf race, offering the purse of 328,800,000 Yen. Over the distance of six furlongs, the favorites were quite unlucky as underestimated Gendarme (193-10) landed the spoils under Kiwamu Ogino.

The seven-year-old horse had a great start, and thanks to an inner gate, he settled in third at the fence. Once the field turned for home, Gendarme could easily rally forward, which he did, seized the top, and cruised towards the wire.

In the end, a couple of rivals were dangerously closing on him; however, the finish came in time for Gendarme, and he scored the race in 1m 7.80s. He left Win Marvel (19-1) in second by a neck, with Naran Huleg (176-10) taking third place.

The victorious Gendarme is trained by Yasutoshi Ikee and got close to winning G1 races only as a two-year-old. Back in 2017, the son of Kitten’s Joy achieved a G2 victory and finished second in the G1 Hopeful Stakes; however, he hasn’t shown anything like it for four whole years as his placings at the Graded stage usually were double digits.

In 2020, Gendarme won a Listed, while in last season, he bagged a G3, while on Sunday, his triumph must’ve surprised almost everybody.
