Equinox prevails in a pulsating finish for the 2022 Arima Kinen (G1), leading home a one-two for the classic three-year-old generation. Diatonic gets up on the wire to take this season’s earnings to over $1,500,000 when winning the Hanshin Cup (G2) in a blanket finish by a nose.

2022 Hanshin Cup

Grade 2 – Purse $967,000 – 1400 meters – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

What a race we had for the Hanshin Cup with the first eight runners covered by just a length and a half at the wire.

Lots of horses were vying for the lead as the gates opened and it was Opel Charme, Meisho Titan, and the strongly fancied Bathrat Leon that contested a blazing early speed with the quarter going in 22.6 secs and the half-mile in 44.7 secs.

As the field settled down the backstretch it was still Opel Charme on the speed with Purpur Ray and Lotus Land following the leader. Bathrat Leon had been dropped onto the fence in the fourth spot by Yuga Kawada, while the favorite and eventual winner DIATONIC was following his market rival through in the fifth spot in the three-lane.

As they entered the stretch run, it was here that Lotus Land went for the wire, but he was soon challenged, first by Grenadier Guards, and then by Diatonic who came between foes. The two set down to fight it out with Diatonic just prevailing by a nose at the wire.

Lauda Sion came from far back to close strongly and was only beaten half a length with Bathrat Leon holding well for the fourth spot.

2022 Arima Kinen

Grade 1 – Purse $5,450,000 – 2500 metres – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

This was the richest race of the year in Japan and as the gates flung open, both Akai Ito and the eventual runner-up Boldog Hos found themselves in the last two spots. It was also a very poor start for the heavily fancied Geraldina who bobbled leaving the gate but soon recovered to sit in a mid-pack position.

The pace was fast and it was Titleholder who showed early speed, as usual, to spearhead the field through the opening three and a half furlongs in 42.1 secs.

Down the backstretch, it was Titleholder four lengths clear with Break Up and Deep Bond giving chase. Meanwhile, the favorite and eventual winner EQUINOX was well placed in the ninth spot and traveling strongly in mid-pack.

The pace quickened and as they entered the home stretch, it was still Titleholder, but it was here that Efforia and Equinox moved to the leader’s quarters, while Boldog Hos had closed rapidly but had to tip into the 5 lanes for the stretch drive.

With just over a furlong to go, Equinox hit the front and cleared by two lengths. Boldog Hos was closing but the bird had flown, and it was Equinox who cleared away to win in hand by 2 ½ lengths from Boldog Hos with Geraldina running late to grab the third spot.
