2022 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes Odds, Field & Pick

Saturday sees the 8th running of the Turquoise Stakes, a graded handicap that takes place at Nakayama racecourse on Saturday 17th December at 3.25 pm local time in Japan, while the next day at Hanshin the G1 2022 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes will take place for two-year-old

The Turquoise Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $528,000 – 1600 metres – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

This is a prestigious handicap run over one mile and we have a possible field of sixteen runners set to go to post for this valuable event worth more than half a million dollars.

Ablaze looks a potentially interesting runner who is taking a drop down the class ladder after running against tougher foes the last three times. She has run well in a couple of Grade 1 races, so this is a much easier spot.

The four-year-old filly Another Lyric has won four of he none starts and comes here off the back of a poor effort last time. However, she was coming back from a 180+ day break and should be fitter today after finishing 7th in the Listed JBC Ladies Classic in early November.

Erika Vita is one of the three-year-old fillies here and she is still very inexperienced after just five races. However, she has already reached a strong level of form as proven by her win in a Grade 2 back in April. She finished 9th of 17 in the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) back in May and must be of interest on this class drop.

Mama Cocha is most definitely one of the most improved horses in the race having won her last three starts. She has only been off the board once, and that was on her debut and she now has a record of 8-4-1-2. Her recent wins have been in lower grade and this will be her toughest assignment to date.

Shirley Poppy finished off last year with a bang and started this year in the same fashion, taking the Mukogawa Stakes at Hanshin in February. However, she has struggled recently in graded stakes and may need a class drop to get back in the winner’s circle.

Sublime Anthem took her time to break the maiden tag, doing so at the sixth time of asking, but since then has run very well against tougher foes and could be very interesting here.

One of the most consistent horses in training is Win Charlotte who has won five and finished second in another five races from just 13 starts and has never been out of the first four. She looks sure to run a strong race.

With her excellent profile, it is going to be difficult to see Win Charlotte not hitting the board and she is a must-pick for exotics players in exactas and trifectas. Both her and Mama Cocha have very solid records.

However, the main selection is one of the less exposed horses, and that is ERIKA VITA, who has already won a Grade 2, was not disgraced in The Japanese Oaks, and has a recent run which should put her spot on fitness-wise for this slightly easier test.

The other runner of interest is Ablaze, who has been running against much tougher rivals and should appreciate the class drop.

The Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $983,000 – 1600 metres – Turf – 2-Year-Olds

The top two-year-old races are now coming thick and fast in Japan, and after last weekend’s brilliant win from Liberty Island in one of the fillies trials for next year’s 1000 Guineas, we now have the top two-year-old colts who are trying to lay down a marker for next years 2000 Guineas.

The race was first run in 1949 when it was called the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes and was originally run over 6 furlongs. That changed in 1962 when it was changed to a mile and in 1984 it gained Grade 1 status and is now one of the key two-year-old colts trials in Japan.

All Parfait is most definitely one of the best colts seen in Japan this year and he has now won two of his three starts, including the Grade 2 Daily Hai Nisai Stakes last time here at Hanshin. However, the result does not tell the full story as he had an easy time on the pace, and they entered the home stretch he went clear. Finishing late that day was another of today’s runners Danon Touchdown who was trailing early but came wide into the stretch and closed all the way to the wire. He can overturn that form today.

There are plenty of unexposed horses in here and Corpus Christi is one who is currently unbeaten after breaking the maiden tag the first time before stepping forward next time to win a stakes race over seven furlongs and the extra distance today should suit.

We have a few first-time out winners here and two that look of interest are Labeling and Emphasize. Of the two, Emphasize looks the most likely having run nearly a second quicker than his rival and he looks sure to improve.

Dolce More is already a graded stakes winner and is now two from two. Whether he can take another step forward we will have to see, but like many in here, he has already shown great potential and should be on anybody’s shortlist.

A really interesting runner here is Obamburumai who has won both races, including last time when taking the Grade 2 Keio Hai Nisai Stakes. That was over 7 furlongs and this extra furlong looks to give plenty of upside.

There is no doubt that All Parfait will be a popular choice but it could be Danon Touchdown that goes off as the favorite for this race after his strong closing effort last time. He still looked green and should turn that form around.

Coming from a less fashionable stable may be worth a look and the horse we like who could be a nice price on the boards is OBAMBURUMAI who has not put a foot wrong in two starts and could cause a bit of an upset here against stronger fancied rivals.

It is an open race and Emphasize and Corpus Christi are expected to put in solid efforts and can be fighting it out for the minor honors.
