Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby had won the Juvenile Turf seven times between them before the gates opened, and in an absolutely breathless finish to this year’s contest, they had the spoils between them, with Victoria Road shading it for the Irishman by a nose. Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf
Once again, Ryan Moore left the fractions to someone else, playing patience on the rail on the 5-1 second-choice as the longshot Curly Larry And Mo towed them along. Victoria Road needed racing room in mid-stretch, but not as desperately as the 7-5 favorite Silver Knott, who was glued to the fence until William Buick threaded the needle and threw him through a narrow gap.
Victoria Road had first run on his rival, but Silver Knott was rallying like a champ and the two hit the wire in lockstep, with Victoria Road’s nose in just the right place as the camera clicked. The longshot Nagirroc took the show spot; the stopwatch showed a tick under 1:36.

“We said before we came here that if we had one winner we’d be very happy,” said Coolmore partner Michael Tabor, an enthusiastic spokesman for the bloodstock empire. “Now we’ve had two on the first day [with Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Meditate] so there’ll be plenty of red wine tonight!”
What’s to come for Victoria Road?
Victoria Road, a son of Saxon Warrior, was completing a four-timer with this first G1 success, and although it seems perverse to suggest it, he may only be the third-best two-year-old in O’Brien’s barn behind Auguste Rodin and Little Big Bear. The G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 Derby will be on his schedule for 2023.
