It wasn’t to be. Jackie’s Warrior heads off to stud without a Breeders’ Cup win on his record after he again came up short in the Sprint, cut down late by the powerful finish of Elite Power, who completed a double on the day for both trainer Bill Mott (Cody’s Wish) and jockey Irad Ortiz (Goodnight Olive). The writing was on the wall right out of the gate for Jackie’s Warrior, who was a beaten favorite in this race last year and also in the 2020 Juvenile.
He couldn’t get to his customary position on the lead because the longshot Super Ocho was just too fast, rolling through a first quarter in 22.12sec and pushing the 3-5 favorite out of his comfort zone.
Conversely, Elite Power was traveling easily well away from the burn-up on the front end, Ortiz keeping his powder dry on the 5-1 chance until halfway down the stretch.

2022 Breeders Cup Sprint Place & Show Performance
Jackie’s Warrior finally nailed Super Ocho but had nothing left with which to fend off the storming late run of Elite Power, who led deep in the last sixteenth and won by a length, with the longshot CZ Rocket rallying on the rail to take second – matching his position in the 2020 Sprint – ahead of Jackie’s Warrior. The stopwatch showed 1:09 and changed.
Elite Power, another Breeders’ Cup-winning son of Curlin, is a typical representative of Mott’s barn, a slow-burning four-year-old who only made his debut last September. This was his fifth straight win and his first at the G1 level.
