The only Graded-stakes action in the US on a quiet Saturday was at Churchill Downs, where the G3 Chilukki took center stage and was won in dominant style by She Can’t Sing, for whom it was the first success at Graded level. Here is our 2022 Chilukki Stakes Recap.
2022 Chilukki Stakes Recap
She Can’t Sing hits the high note
On a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs, She Can’t Sing brought all the heat necessary when finally making her Graded-stakes breakthrough – her first stakes win on the main track – in the feature Chilukki.
The race had lost a little luster with the scratch of well-fancied Center Aisle, but that mare would have had to have been at her best to cope with She Can’t Sing, the 7-2 third-choice who had her head in front pretty much all the way and opened up in the stretch under Brian Hernandez, clearing away to score by three and three-quarter lengths in a time of 1:38 and two-fifths.
Ice Orchid kept on at one pace to take the place spot, two and a quarter lengths ahead of Liberty M D. The favorite Coach was a dull fourth.
“Brian did a great job, just sat there, and she inherited the lead,” said trainer Chris Block. “I knew around the far turn – when she’s in that much hand, got so much horse – that it would be tough for her to get run down.”
She Can’t Sing, now eight-for-33 in a busy career was winning her first Graded stakes at the sixth attempt. The daughter of Bernardini will stay in training next year.
