2022 Comely Stakes Odds & More Races from Aqueduct

Three races dominate this Friday’s card at Aqueduct including two Grade 3 contests – the 2022 Comely Stakes, Long Island Stakes and Turf Sprint.

Ahead of what is bound to be a fantastic day of racing, here is everything you need to know.

Long Island Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and 3/8, turf, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool $300,000

The most lucrative race on Friday’s Aqueduct card comes in the form of the Long Island Stakes. Raced over a distance of 1 mile and 3/8, six horses are expected to take their chance in this year’s renewal.

Likely favourite for the contest is Temple City Terror who heads into the race following a nice performance in the Grade 3 Dowager Stakes where she won nicely from off the pace. A repeat of that performance will see her go very close.

Temple City Terror will need a good pace to aim at and it could be Kalifornia Queen that provides it.

Trained out of the Chad Brown barn, she heads into the contest having placed in four consecutive stakes contests including just a few weeks ago in the Athenia Stakes. She has raced some competitive races in her career but has always been denied by some better horses. It could be that this longer distance will help her find more and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her leading as the runners turn for home.

Rocky Sky is another representative from the Chad Brown yard and could be his best chance of success. Manny Franco will take the ride and Rocky Sky heads into the contest following a solid success last time out at Aqueduct. It’s fair to say that Rocky Sky’s performance was workmanlike and it will be interesting to see if she has the speed to fend off some of her rivals here.

The final Brown runner is Capital Structure with Irad Ortiz taking the ride. She is relatively unexposed at this level and if she can lock some improvement she could be the one to beat.

The two outsiders of the field will be Tic Tic Tic Boom and Big Time Lady – both look like they have plenty to find if they are to make any sort of dent in this field.

Despite the prospect of being surrounded by three Chad Brown horses the vote here goes to Temple City Terror. Her performance in the Dowager Stakes was a taking performance and it could be that she has plenty more to come.

Comely Stakes

Grade 3, 1 mile and 1 furlong, dirt, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool £150,000

At the time of writing eight horses are due to head down to post for this year’s Comely Stakes. Raced over the extended mile, all eight horses will believe they have a chance of success.

The expected favorite for the contest is the Claude McGauhey trained Kathleen O who is returning to the track for the first time since her disappointing run in the Kentucky Oaks. Amongst the favourites for that race, she ran poorly and could only finish 10th. A former duel Grade 2 winner earlier in the season, this will be her first run since May and it will be intriguing to see how fit and race ready she is, but there can be no doubt that she is the class angle of the race.

Looking to take Kathleen O on will be the Bill Mott trained Nostalgic. A Grade 3 winner earlier in the year in the Gazelle Stakes she was unlucky last time out when she was just denied in the Grade 3 Turn Back The Alarm Handicap. She arrives at the race fit and ready and if Kathleen O fails to fire she could well pick up the pieces.

Likely to round out the top three in the betting is Falconet for Todd Pletcher and Irad Ortiz. Yet to win at this level, it looks like she has something to find on her two rivals at the head of the market. However, she has shown some potential in her two wins this year. Look for Falconet to make her move late and if the pace collapses upfront she could find herself ideally placed for victory.

A live outsider who is likely to go off at a big price could be Sixtythreecaliber. An impressive winner of the Seneca Overnight Stakes, she beat Falconet that day and displayed the best speed figure of her career. There could be more to come from the Thomas Amoss runner and her connections will arrive at Aqueduct thinking she has a live chance.

All eyes for this contest will be on Kathleen O but having been off the track for over seven months the more sensible play could be Nostalgic. A previous winner in this Grade at this track indicates that another bold showing could be on the cards, she arrives fitter than her rivals and that fitness edge could she her just shade this year’s renewal.

Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship

6 furlongs, turf, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool $150,000

The most competitive race of the day comes in this year’s Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship where twelve horses will looking to claim this year’s contest.

In such a big field we will look at several horses who will provide plenty of value.

The prohibitive favorite for the race could well be Dancing Buck who is looking to land the Aqueduct Sprint alongside the Belmont Sprint (although that race was completed at Aqueduct)

Handed a nightmare draw on the outside it looks like Dancing Buck will have to prove all of his class if he is to come out on top. He beat five horses in this field in the Belmont Sprint having always been up with the speed. The test will be whether he can find a way to get up with the early speed from the outside stall but if he can he looks the horse to beat.

Another horse drawn on  the outside who will be hoping of a big run will be Gear Jockey. Gear Jockey has come up against some great horses recently including Golden Pal and certainly has prominent early speed. He has been found out from a stamina point of view but is more than capable of a big run here.

The speed angle and a horse that many believe could be a real challenger is Bad Beat Brian who has been handed a nice inside draw in box 2.

A placed Stakes performer in the past he was unlucky last time out in the Woodford Stakes. Bad Beat Brian has one of the best speed figures in the contest and if he can break cleanly he could be hard to pass.

On Bad Beat Brian’s inside will Voodoo Zip. Irad Ortiz will take the ride and is another who will be looking to make the most of his stall position. Voodoo Zip ran in the Woodford but found the race too tough. He will be hoping a return to calmer waters could see him return to a positive light.

At a bigger price it could be worth taking a look at Run Curtis Run. One of the youngest horses in the field, this will be the first time he has competed against older horses. He enters the race as one to watch following his very taking performance last time out at Aqueduct. Content to sit off the pace, he blazed down the home straight coming from last to first to win in cosy style.

With twelve runners in the field this has all the potential to be a muddling race. Despite his wide draw it could be worth siding with Dancing Buck who has already proved himself as one of the classiest horses in the race. He has already beaten five of these horses and looks well set to win another race of this nature.
