2022 ft. lauderdale stakes

There were plenty of names for the notebook at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, with several horses booking their tickets to the big-money Pegasus World Cup meet at the end of January. Elsewhere, Frank’s Rockette routed her rivals in the G3 Sugar Swirl, while Sibelius signed for his first Graded win in the G3 Mr Prospector. Check our 2022 Ft Lauderdale Stakes.

City Man (G2 Ft. Lauderdale) will bid for the Turf; Skippylongstocking (G3 Harlan’s Holiday) has the $3m World Cup on his agenda; Stolen Holiday (G3 Suwannee River) is under consideration for the Filly & Mare Turf.

Saving the best until last, City Man rounded off a terrific year and set himself up for what could be an even better 2023 when landing the Ft. Lauderdale at Gulfstream Park, the feature on a stakes-heavy New Year’s Eve.

On his first start outside New York, the 3-1 second-choice stalked the pace while saving ground under Joel Rosario, then got a dream run on the rail as they straightened for home and soon stamped his authority, driving on to win by a length and a half from barn mate Decorated Invader, who had drawn in off the also-eligible list following a late scratch.

Street Ready rallied for third, beaten a neck, but even-money favourite Colonel Liam – on a tough afternoon for chalk players – came up empty in the stretch and faded into sixth. The time was 1:46 and changed.

“He’s getting better as he gets older,” said trainer Christophe Clement, who will now point City Man – five-for-eight in 2022 – and Decorated Invader to the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf over the same course and distance on January 28, a race in which the Frenchman has never had a runner.

G3, $125,000, 1m turf, 3yo+ females

Another New Yorker made the journey down the eastern seaboard worthwhile when Stolen Holiday came fast and late to win the Suwannee River, potentially earning herself a return trip for the lucrative Pegasus World Cup meeting.

Junior Alvarado had to resort to plan B on the 5-1 fourth-choice after some early bumping left them playing catch-up down the backstretch. Still, Stolen Holiday found overdrive with an eighth to travel and ran down Lady Rockstar in the closing stages to win going away by a length, stopping the clock in 1:34 and one-fifth. Long-time leader Bay Storm was a length and a half back in third, while the favoured Scottish Star weakened into sixth.

“She had to try a different style today, as she’s usually closer to the pace, but she finished off really well,” said trainer Shug McGaughey.

This was Stolen Holiday’s second G3 score in three starts following her success in the Eatontown at Monmouth Park in June, and she may now be considered for the G3 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf over a mile-sixteenth on January 28.

2022 Harlan’s Holiday Stakes

G3, $150,000, 1m 1/16 dirt, 3yo+

One-time Triple Crown hopeful Skippylongstocking laid the ground for a big four-year-old campaign when running out a dominant winner of the Harlan’s Holiday, booking himself a ticket to the $3m G1 Pegasus World Cup.

The Belmont Stakes third, a 3-1 third-choice here, followed Pioneer Of Medina around the track until moving smoothly to the lead on the turn, and was then kept up to his work by Irad Ortiz to maintain his advantage, crossing the line two lengths clear of Pioneer Of Medina, who rallied back past Simplification to claim the place spot by a neck. The stopwatch showed 1:42 and three-fifths; the favourite O’Connor, a barn mate of the winner, was a never-dangerous fourth.

“He always tries, and I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves,” said trainer Saffie Joseph. “He beat some good horses there.”

Skippylongstocking was also fifth in the Preakness and is likely to form part of a three-pronged assault on the Pegasus World Cup from Joseph, who also intends to run G1 Florida Derby winner White Abarrio and O’Connor.

2022 Mr Prospector Stakes

G3, $125,000, 7f dirt, 3yo+

It took him until the final day of his four-year-old campaign. However, the hard-working Sibelius finally made his Graded-stakes breakthrough on his 17th start with an authoritative victory in the Mr. Prospector.

The 4-1 fourth-choice looked sharp from the gate, sitting in behind the favoured Uncle Ernie until breezing past on the home turn, then turning back the persistent threat of Dean Delivers to win by two and a quarter lengths in 1:23 and change. Steal Sunshine rallied from the back of the pack for third, two lengths further back.

“He was dragging me to the lead as we turned for home,” said jockey Junior Alvarado. “I just had to make sure he stayed happy, as he was just much the best horse today.”

This was the fourth success of an 11-race campaign for Sibelius. The horse has been on the go since the first week of January and holds his form very well. “He’s been a great horse to have around,” said trainer Jerry O’Dwyer.

2022 Sugar Swirl Stakes

G3, $125,000, 6f dirt, 3yo+ females

The easiest winner of the afternoon by some distance was Frank’s Rockette, who tore the Sugar Swirl apart with a ferocious display of front-running.

The 4-5 favourite – runner-up in the Sugar Swirl 12 months earlier – broke on top under Luis Saez and simply kept improving her position, shaking loose around the turn and clearing right away in the stretch to win by 12 and quarter lengths, eased down in a time of 1:09 and three-fifths. Joyful Cadence was best of the rest by a neck over Coppelia.

“She just said ‘adios’ to them,” said trainer Bill Mott. “She’s been a model of consistency throughout her career, always brings a good race to the game.”

Mott is right; Frank’s Rockette has only missed the board three times in 25 starts, all three blowouts coming at Keeneland and two of them at the Breeders’ Cup. She is expected to have one more race before being retired to broodmare duties in the spring.
