2022 Hollywood Turf Cup Odds & Red Carpet Stakes Picks

Red Carpet Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $150,000 – 1 3/8 miles – Turf – 3-Year-Old and Up Fillies & Mares

Nine runners go to the gate for the Red Carpet and although it’s not a big field, we have previous graded stakes contenders including a number of these dropping down the class ladder from Grade 1 and Grade. Add to that a number of horses that are improving and this should be a very good race.

Lady Jae has drawn the inside post position and she is interesting as a possible longshot on the boards at around 12/1 after being a late closer last time over six and a half furlongs. She is stepping up the class ladder here so it might be tough, and an underneath slice is surely the best she can hope for.

The early morning line chalk is Sister Otoole at 5/2 from the Graham Motion barn and she has been running well having hit the board on her last three starts, including a win at Stakes level over this track and distance two back. Her last race was over a mile and a half and the cut back in distance by a furlong looks positive, and she must hold a strong chance.

A real interesting contender here is Scarabea from the Eoin Harty barn who was fifth in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive last time and had previously finished just behind today’s foe Sister Otoole and this stretch back out to a mile and three-eighths looks a positive move. She was game and closing late in that stakes race against the motion runner, and at 5/1 on the morning line odds, she looks great value to hit the board.

The Dan Blacker barn has Queen Of The Temple in here and she is another taking the class drop from Grade 1 company and was only a quarter of a length behind Scarabea in that race. She had a good position on the fence and then had to angle out at the sixteenth pole and closed to the wire. At the forecast 6/1 morning line odds, she looks like a better bet than Scarabea.

Looking at the others here, the Hector Barrios-ridden Quatroelle could go back to back after winning an $80k Optional Claimer, and the stretch out by two furlongs gives plenty of upside.

The others look to have a tough assignment here. However, one of the longshots of interest is Angel Nadeshiko who cannot match some of the Beyer speed figures of her rivals, but is less exposed and won last time going gate to wire and could be the speed angle.

Looking at the main players in the betting tells us this is a very tough race to call as the top Beyers are very close between the top four runners at the morning line odds.

The main pick is QUEEN OF THE TEMPLE who should get a nice stalking position behind the pace, and that looks likely to come from Angel Nadeschiko (include in exotics). If Queen Of The Temple can get a clean run then she should have too much late on, and will be looking to challenge at the top of the stretch and will battle to the wire.

The chalk looks like no value here and Scarabea and Quatroelle could be fighting it out to hit the board.

Hollywood Turf Cup

Grade 2 – Purse $250,000 – 1 1/2 miles – Turf – 3-Year-Old and Up Fillies & Mares

Seven foes are set to go to post for the Grade 2 Hollywood Turf Cup on Friday 25th November at 6.30 pm EST and it looks to be an interesting race for the 3-year-olds and older horses.

The Grey Wizard finished second behind Nations Pride two back in the Caesars Jockey Club Derby Invitational and that was a superb effort from the Graham Motion runner. However, he was beaten in an allowance at Belmont next time and will need to be on better form to take this Grade 2. He does have the benefit of stretching back out to a mile and a half and that could see him hit the board.

Cash Equity who had done most of his racing in France before moving stateside and to the barn of Philip D’Amato in early 2022, has now had four runs with the last two in Graded Stakes company. This gelding produced a Beyer figure of 92 on that last run, and also in that race was one of today’s foes, Dicey Mo Chara who finished second, three lengths in advance of the D’Amato runner.

Cash Equity was coming back from a 90-day layoff then and looks likely to turn that form around.

Go On had run well here in November 2021 when beaten just over a length in a $40k Optional Claimer and spent the early part of 2022 in Dubai where he came up against top-class horses like Hot Rod Charlie and Hypothetical. Naturally, he was well beaten in those two races, but came back from a layoff at Santa Anita in October when hitting the show spot, and progressed from that to win last out. He looks an interesting one here.

The Michael McCarthy-trained Avenue was a disappointment last time, but that came off a sixty-day layoff. He has hit the board in five of eight starts and is still unexposed.

Dean Martini is the most experienced horse here with 27 starts and has won three of those while hitting the board in a further ten. He was behind Avenue the last time they clashed and there seems little reason for him to turn that form around.

Prince Abama is another from the D’Amato barn and the booking of Flavien Prat is a big pointer to this one’s chances today. Relatively lightly raced with just nine starts and a record of 9-2-4-1.

The interesting point about this one is his track form at Del Mar, having won twice and finished second in his three starts here. The big question mark is that he is stretching out by half a mile and that extra distance looks to be the only negative. His form is rock solid and this is a weak renewal of the race.

Coming here second off the lay, then Cash Equity looks to be on to include in exotics and has a great chance to hit the board.

The other one we like is the improving Go On who has come back from his two runs in Dubai in top form and produced a career-best 90 Beyer last time. He is another taking a big stretch-out in distance and it’s that more than anything that is a negative. In top form and could go well at rewarding odds on the board.

The main selection though has to be PRINCE ABAMA with Flavien Prat doing the steering. His form is solid and his record here at Del Mar is outstanding.
