On Saturday, the pinnacle of the card at the Churchill Downs is a G3 turf race open to four-year-old and older horses – the Louisville Stakes, where Another Mystery could once again prove to be a great servant for the connections in terms of the Graded scene. Here are our 2022 Louisville Stakes Odds & Betting Pick.
2022 Louisville Stakes Odds & Field
The purse of $200,000 attracted a field of fifteen four-year-old and older horses who will cover the distance of a mile and a half. The G3 turf race didn’t lure in such a star as Arklow in last year’s edition, but there are some interesting horses vying for the victory, especially Another Mystery (6/1). The six-year-old horse had been trying to succeed in the Graded scene for several years with varying results; however, after closing the season 2021 with a Listed win, he finally managed to triumph in a G3 race as the Chris Block bound bay transformed his seasonal debut into a dead-heat victory in the John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes.
Subsequently, he failed to deliver among G2 company at the first attempt; still, he made amends for that performance in the G2 Elkhorn Stakes in April. Back then, Another Mystery powerfully rallied in the closing stages and secured second place. If he shows something similar on Saturday, he should fight for the win.
Five-year-old Shamrocket (4/1) is another one to consider, given he’s collected some victories in the Listed and black-type races, plus he placed at the Graded scene. Most notably, the Todd Pletcher trainee finished second in the G2 Mac Diarmida Stakes in March and bettered even more preferred horses. Last time out, Shamrocket showed nothing of interest in a Listed event.
Even though he boasts some class, he won’t have it easy because he tends to finish from the rear of the field, which does not always allow the horse to close on the front in time, especially when he might need to throng among fourteen of his rivals.
Alongside Another Mystery, Strong Tide (10/1) and Ajourneytofreedom (5/1) showed up in the mention John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes. After contributing to the pace, the former faded to third place; however, he took the same place in last year’s Louisville Stakes. His most recent performance was a bit disappointing, but he might actually be the biggest threat to Another Mystery if he managed to give a similar effort here as in 2021.
The latter finished only sixth in the John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes; still, his previous results suggest he is a solid Graded performer and thus shouldn’t be entirely disregarded.
The last one to mention is Cavalry Charge (12/1), who failed to fire in his G1 outing at the beginning of May, but he scored the G3 Fair Grounds Stakes in February and ran an alright race among G2 company. If he broke and initially found a good position, he could be an interesting contender.
