022 Mile Championship Odds & Tokyo Sports Hai Preview

A huge field of seventeen runners are due to go to post for this valuable Grade 1 2022 Mile Championship, this event takes place at the Hanshin racecourse which has a crowd capacity of 139,000 spectators and hosts the famous Japan Cup on dirt.

2022 Mile Championship

Grade 1 – Purse JPY 342,000,000 ($2.4 Million) (1 Mile) – Turf – 3-Year-Old and Up

The Mile Championship is one of it’s top class races and this year has bought together a strong field.

Ryan Moore rides the ultra consistent Salios who has run well in this race in the last two years finishing 5th of 17 in 2020 and then 6th of 16 in last years event. He has run four times since then and warmed up for this with success last month in the Grade 2 Mainichi Okan at Tokyo when beating another of today’s rivals Justin Cafe and he looks to have been primed for his third attempt at this valuable prize.

One of the superstars of Japanese racing, and not just for her racing prowess is Sodashi, the almost white mare who is strongly fancied here at odds of around +750 (15/2)

She won six of her first seven races in 2020/2021 including the Japanese 1000 Guineas (Oka Sho) . She has found it tougher since then but has come back to form with a win and two places in Grade 1 company, and last time was a winner when dropped in class. No doubt she would be a popular winner.

Of the favorites for this Grade 1, then we have to mention both Lotus Land and Soul Rush who looks to be the likely favorite here.

Lotus Land was 6th of 18 here at Hanshin last time in the Grade 2 MBS Sho Swan Stakes and that came after a layoff, so this one looks sure to be fit and ready after the previous run that came in June.

Soul Rush is one of the least exposed horses in this field and he put together a four-race winning streak between December 2021 and April 2022 before being beaten at this level in June. He has since had a break and came back last month to run a fine second behind another of today’s rivals Serifos in the Grade 2 Fuji Stakes in Tokyo. He’ll be much fitter today and has a fine chance.

Happy Hour, Falconia, Justin Cafe, Ho O Amazon, and Air Lolonois all look to have their work cut out to hit the board in this top class Grade 1.

2022 Mile Championship Odds & Betting Pick

A very competitive Grade 1 event and no doubting the mare Sodashi would be a very popular winner and she should prove to be tough to keep off the board.

Our main selection here though is not the favorite. We like the look of the Salios for Ryan Moore who has a good record in the race and will be one of those closing strongly late on.

At longer odds, then Serifos could be the one after beating the likely favorite last time.

The Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse JPY 72,000,000 ($510,000) (1 Mile 1 Furlong) – Turf – 2-Year-Olds (Open to Colts & Fillies)

An exciting race in prospect with eleven colts going to post for this half-a-million-dollar pot. Here we see some of the most exciting two-year-olds in Japan over the extended mile trip.

Taisei Courageux made his debut in early October when winning a two-year-old newcomers race here at Tokyo and after that run took a step up the class ladder just over two weeks ago when finishing a strong fourth in a Listed contest. That form looks solid and he will be one of the fancied runners here.

Only one of these has ever run at the graded stakes level and that is Josho Hope trained by Koichi Shintani and ridden by Damian Lane. This son of Mikki Rocket started his career in June when winning a two-year-old newcomers race at Chukyo racecourse and has since been running at the stakes level. He was fourth in a Grade 3 last time, and although sure to run well, he may find some of these lesser-exposed unbeaten colts too much to handle.

There are a number of “once run once won” horses here and the most interesting ones include Rock Creek ridden by top French Jockey Christophe Lemaire, Gastrique and Fate, with the last named producing a very fast time at Niigata racecourse when making his debut back in August. Has to overcome the layoff but is sure to be one of the more fancied runners.

A good way to find potential winners in Japan is by looking closely at the jockey bookings and one to take note of here is leading English rider Ryan Moore who US and British fans will know well, and he takes the ride on the Manabu Ikezoe trained Dura Erede who has had three starts and was last seen when breaking the maiden tag at the third attempt at Sapporo in August. His time figures are not as strong as some of his rivals, but Moore will definitely get improvement from the horse and he could be decent odds to upset some more fancied rivals.

Of the others in the race then we have to give a mention to Danon The Tiger who was second over the same course and distance on his debut but progressed next time to break the maiden and looks one that is a serious player here based on the clock.

The other to take note of in the betting is Hearts Concerto who won a two-year-old newcomers event on debut. That race was over a furlong shorter and he is sure to be a strong closer here.

Hai Nisai Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

A very exciting race with some exciting unexposed two-year-olds going to post. The main pick here is Taisei Courageux who has already proved his liking for this track and can progress from his good showing last time.

Danon The Tiger has the right profile for the race and is one of the very interesting maiden winners, and his winning time last time was very solid.

At bigger odds, then Schilthorn cannot be discounted after his win last time.
