2022 Pat O'Brien Stakes Odds, Field & Picks

This 2022 Pat O’Brien Stakes features some top quality horses who all will be hoping to earn a spot in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Here is everything you need to know

Pat O’Brien Stakes

Grade 2, 7 furlongs, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool $250,000

Del Mar, the scene of last year’s Breeders’ Cup will once again play host to this year’s Pat O’Brien Stakes. At the time of writing ten horses have been declared for the race.

Expected to be leading the betting is the Bill Mott trained Speaker’s Corner. A six time winner,  he is a multiple graded victor and is looking to bounce back following a few narrow misses recently.

One of the best horses in training at this distance, Mott will be hoping legendary jockey Mike Smith can guide his charge to his seventh career victory.  He is very much the horse to beat.

Laurel River is the most interesting horse in the race. Trained by Bob Baffert, he has just had a handful of starts which have been filled with promise. Making his debut in the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes, he finished second and is definitely the unknown quantity in the race.

Looking to add to his list of graded wins is American Theorem. Trained by George Papaprodromou, American Theorem was an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes last time out. That race was held at Del Mar and it’s clear he loves this track. He has raced twice at the Californian track and is yet to be defeated. He is a danger to all.

He beat Get Her Number that day into second place and beat him by a wide margin. Get Her Number will be hoping to exact some revenge here but looks to have plenty to find.

CZ Rocket is the oldest horse in the race and has seen it all before. At eight years old, he finished as a runner up in the race last year but did win the race back in 2020.

Clearly Del Mar is a track he likes and he shouldn’t be discounted this year despite advancing in age. He could be the value play of the day.

Another horse who heads into the race in great form is Defunded. A runner up in the Hollywood Gold Cup, that race was ran at the highest level and if he can reproduce that form here, he will certainly play a part in proceedings.

The Chosen Vron has had a successful season winning consecutive Grade 3 races. Whilst both wins have come at Santa Anita his trainer Eric Kruljac will be hoping he can translate his great form  over to Del Mar.

He has never won a race at this level but has a good outside chance of changing that record here.

Pat O’Brien Stakes Betting Picks

Despite defeats in his last two starts, Speaker’s Corner is still one of the nations best one milers. He has only lost to top class horses and although the pressure is on, he should reaffirm his class here and should prove incredibly hard to beat.
