The G3 San Francisco Mile is the peak of the racing card at the Golden Gate where fourteen horses will clash on the turf surface. On Saturday, ex-French Ecrivain along with veteran Restrainedvengence are strong contenders, but trainerRichard Baltas vies for the third consecutive winning here, sending in Vanzzy.
2022 San Francisco Mile
This G3 turf race attracted a field of fourteen three-year-old and older horses who will clash at the distance of a mile. With the purse of $250,000 up for grabs, some interesting runners gather here but no clear star who shouldn’t lose here.
Nine-year-old Camino Del Paraiso has been a great servant to the connections, collecting several places at the Golden Gate and Santa Anita in Graded races, while he won some black-type races. He finished third in the San Francisco Mile Stakes 2020, while seven-year-old Restrainedvengence got the same spot in 2021, upon which he managed to deliver in the G3 American Stakes, moreover, he took third place in the G1 BC Dirt Mile behind Life Is Good and Ginobili. Still, he was only fifth in his seasonal debut among the Listed company.
Therefore, we should also focus on the contestants who seem classy, yet had some issues in the past and it’s still possible for them to return to the winning ways, which is the case for four-year-old Get Her Number trained by Ruben Alvarado.
The bay scored the G1 American Pharoah Stakes in 2020, however, in his Classic season he failed to impress at all and didn’t manage to succeed even in an Allowance race. He then rested since July until March 2022 when Get Her Number returned with a narrow Allowance victory, which doesn’t have to mean he’s ready to tackle the G3 company but he should be considered.
New lot of Richard Mandella is called Ecrivain who looked a fine French Classic prospect in 2020 but was disappointing in most of his outings and as his best effort in 2022 came only in a G3 company, he was shipped to the US.
The horse, indeed, has always oozed class but never really managed to prove it properly and it’s a question whether the change of environment could persuade him to try harder. The last to mention is five-year-old Vanzzy trained by Richard Baltas who could ensure him third win in a row in this race but who hasn’t place at the Graded scene since 2020.

Our 2022 San Francisco Mile Betting Pick is:
Vanzzy who seems to have the right profile to score this. He’s only a five-year-old with some progress still being an option, moreover, he’s in form. We also like Restrainedvengence who could do one better here than in 2021 as he has enough experience with this race and has beaten very solid horses last year.
