Summer must be here because the horses are running at Saratoga Race Course again. America’s finest racecourse begins its outstanding 40-day meet on Thursday when the feature is the G3 2022 Schuylerville Stakes, a hard-to-assess heat that provides bettors with a tricky opening-day puzzle.
Grade 3, $175,000, 6f, 2yo fillies
The pleasures and perils of summer two-year-old racing are on display in the Schuylerville at Saratoga, with eight of the nine runners having won their only start and none of them familiar with today’s distance.
It’s a guessing game, as most of these fillies are likely to improve at different rates and by different amounts, and the value of those maiden wins are certainly not all equal.
Pedigree and odds are a help, but it’s certainly a case of bettor beware, and just because a horse was on the pace on debut, it doesn’t follow that it will make the lead in this better grade.
Saratoga is a big, prestigious track, so another big-track form is a positive. Just Cindy (5-2) rallied brightly to run out a comfortable winner over five and a half furlongs at Churchill Downs Race Track and has Irad Ortiz in the plate, both plusses. As a daughter of Triple Crown winner Justify, she could be one to watch.
Also, a winner at Churchill Downs was Summer Promise (3-1), who has a pedigree plus through sire Uncle Mo and the benefit of last year’s Saratoga top jockey Luis Saez in the saddle. She made all to win by five lengths over five furlongs, and trainer Wayne Lukas has won the Schuylerville six times, although not since 2004.
Mark Casse is also on the race’s roll of honor and sends three to the gate, with the odds favoring Me And My Shadow (7-2), who led at every call over five furlongs on the synthetic surface at Woodbine to win by four lengths.
Woodbine form is a notch below what’s required at Saratoga, and she and barn mate Adora (6-1) – a daughter of Into Mischief who won over the same course and distance by four and three-quarters – may be at a disadvantage against the top two in the market.
Casse’s third runner Janis Joplin (12-1) is the only maiden here, compromised by a slow start at Churchill Downs but keeping on late for third over five and a half furlongs. It wasn’t a bad effort at a big track but she’s playing catch-up now.
Winners at second-tier tracks need something extra now they’re pitching in the big league. Vedareo (8-1) made all over four and a half furlongs at Parx Racing; Sweet Harmony (15-1) was a narrow winner over the same distance at Monmouth Park; Motown Mischief (20-1) scored over four and a half at little Presque Isle Downs; Musicmansandy (12-1) won over five furlongs at Delaware Park, coming away to score by four and a half lengths. When there isn’t much to go on, small angles like major-track experience can make a big difference.
Schuylerville S. Betting Prediction
Prediction Bets should be kept small. SUMMER PROMISE was impressive at a top-tier track and may be the best equipped to handle this step up in class.
