A couple of G3 turf races for two-year-olds headlined Sunday’s card in Santa Anita Park, while both of the mile-long events saw victories of favorites. At first, Comanche Country showed a solid turn-of—foot among fillies in the 2022 Surfer Girl Stakes and prevailed over Sell The Dream, upon which the field of the Zuma Beach Stakes didn’t stand a chance against talented Packs A Wahlop.
Surfer Girl Stakes
The purse of $200,000 lured in a field of eight two-year-old fillies who covered the distance of a mile in this G3 event. On the turf surface, favourite Comanche Country (4-5) had a good start, but Umberto Rispoli aboard let her settle in the midpack.
The Philip D’Amato bound bay galloped at the fence in fourth place, and once the fillies hit the final stretch, the jockey found his mount some room to unfold her finish. Sell The Dream (18-5) was fighting bravely, but in the end, Comanche Country prevailed by half a length in 1m 35.20s. Behind second Sell The Dream, Bolt’s Broad (44-1) took third place.
Comanche Country is a daughter of Highland Reel and ran twice in Ireland, upon which she was shipped to the US, where she’s unbeaten in three outings. After bagging a maiden, Comanche Country scored a Listed in front of Sell The Dream, whom she also defeated on Sunday, even if just by half a length as the chestnut ran a great race in second.

Outsider Bolt’s Broad galloped at the rear of the field to deliver a fine finish in the final stretch, snatching up third place.
Zuma Beach Stakes
Another G3 turf race of the card was open to two-year-old colts and saw a preferred participant’s victory. Over the distance of a mile, Packs A Wahlop (2-1) travelled in second behind leading Castlerock (44-1), took command in the final stretch, and subsequently drew clear from him to triumph the $200,000 event in 1m 34.07s.
The Jeff Mullins bound grey extended his lead to two and ¾ of a length, leaving Clastlerock in second, with Malibu Coast (123-10) taking third.
Packs A Wahlop entered the Zuma Beach Stakes picture with three starts under his belt. The son of Creative Cause broke his maiden at the second attempt and then demonstrated his class in the G3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes.
Therefore, he was a hot favourite for Sunday’s event as, under Mike Smith, he simply wasn’t expected to lose, and the grey, indeed, didn’t when winning the race easily. Castlerock delivered a surprisingly bold effort when running from the front, while in the final stretch, none of his rivals, save for the victor, got even closer to him.

He finished second, and Malibu Coast snatched up a third place behind him as the presumable biggest threats for the favourite, including sixth Dandy Man Shines (59-10), showed nothing of interest.
