The highlight of the second day of this year’s Glorious Goodwood Festival is the Group 1 2022 Sussex Stakes which will see the winner of the race qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, due to be held later in the year.
Before the Sussex Stakes are two Grade 3 contests, the Angel Oak Tree Stakes and Market Molecomb Stakes.

Qatar Sussex Stakes
Group One, one mile, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool £275,000
All eyes will be on Baaeed for the 2022 Sussex Stakes. The superstar one miler is yet to taste defeat in his career and is one of the best horses in the world.
Many were hoping that Coroebus would be lining up to try and wrestle Baaeed’s unbeaten crown away, but the 2000 Guineas winner is skipping Goodwood to focus on the Juddmonte next month.
With Coroebus out of the picture, Baaeed odds have shortened to -600.
Baaeed’s trainer William Haggas has already indicated that this is likely to be Baaeed’s last season in training and his last run at one mile. Haggas will be hoping his charge signs off in style and in the process nets him his first ever Sussex Stakes.
Next in the betting comes Alcohol Free who is looking to defend his crown after winning this race last year.
Although it looks like he has a tough job on his hands, he does head into this year’s renewal in good form following a win in the Group One Darley Cup Stakes. He beat Naval Crown that day which represents very good form. If Baaeed encounters any sort of problem, Alcohol Free could be the one to take advantage.
Rounding off the top three in the betting is the Aidan O’Brien trained Order of Australia. O’Brien has won this race on five occasions and will feel he has a live chance once again this year.
Order of Australia warmed up for this race nicely with a taking success in the Grade 2 Romanised Minstrel Stakes. That was an impressive performance and he can give the top two in the market a fright if everything falls into place here.
The reward for the winner of this race is a fully paid entry into the Breeders’ Cup Mile, therefore it isn’t a surprise that this race has an international flavor to it.
Bathrat Leon has made the trip over from Japan. An outsider in this field, Bathrat Leon has already enjoyed success on foreign soil after winning the Grade 2 Godolphin Mile earlier in the season at Meydan. Another step up is needed but he is the undoubtedly the unknown quantity of the race.
Modern Games is a former Grade One winner and enters this race flying under the radar after two disappointing runs in France. If back on song he could offer some great value at a huge price.
Angel Bleu is another winner at the highest level but has found things tougher this season. He has only had two runs this season and needs to bounce back from a disappointing ninth place finish in this year’s St James Palace Stakes.
2022 Sussex Stakes Betting Pick
Not since the days of Frankel have we seen such a dominant horse as Baaeed and despite some top quality opposition, he should have too much class and speed for this field as he looks to land his fifth successive Grade One contest.

Angel Oak Tree Stakes
Group 3, seven furlongs, open to fillies and mares who are 3. Total prize pool £50,000
One of the most competitive races of the day awaits in this year’s Whispering Angel Oaks Tree Stakes. Seventeen will head to post for this year’s race and there is value everywhere you look.
Current favorite is Soft Whisper. Owned by Godolphin and trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, Soft Whisper heads into this race off the back of two consecutive Listed victories.
She makes the small step up in class having not won in graded company before but is the form angle of the race.
Another who heads into the race with some good form behind them is Samahram. Making the trip over from France, her form is a little unknown but her win last time out in Listed company as well as the eye catching booking of Frankie Dettori give plenty of reasons for any of her backers to be optimistic.
At a bigger price, Miss Carol Ann was another impressive winner last time out. Trained by the excellent Roger Varian, Miss Carol Ann did enough to win her last race in handicap company. A career-best will be needed if she is to win here but she could offer some real value.
At an even bigger price, it could be worth siding with Honey Sweet. A Listed winner in the past, she has recently struggled for consistency but ran a good race to finish second in the Eternal Stakes behind the impressive Oscula. That is a good bit of form and she could be back to her best for this contest.
Angel Oak Tree Stakes Betting Prediction
This is a hard race to call and every horse in the race has a chance. We will take a chance with the French raider Samahram. Clearly, trainer F H Graffard must fancy her chances if she is making the trip across the Channel. Coupled with the booking of Frankie Dettori, she has to have a great chance.

Market Molecomb Stakes
Group 3, five furlongs, open to two year old horses. Total prize pool £75,000
Eight will head to post for this year’s Molecomb Stakes. Another competitive affair, the betting is headlined by Rocket Rodney who is looking to win his third race of the season.
Potentially a horse going places, Rocket Rodney is looking to back up his win in the Coral Dragon Stakes. A comfortable winner that day, Rocket Rodney has the speed to burn and could make this step up in trip with ease.
Looking to spring a surprise is the David Loughnanne trained Walbank.
Walbank has one win in his three career starts but ran a cracker in this year’s Norfolk Stakes finishing as the runner-up. That race was a Group 2 contest and based on that form he could be the one to beat.
The winner of this year’s Super Sprint was Eddie’s Boy. He has a much smaller field to contend with this time around but was mightily impressive that day. Another one who is looking to take the step up in class, he has to be treated with respect.
Irish raider Studio City was an easy winner of his maiden at Navan just a few weeks ago. A comfortable winner that day, there could be much more to come and he could be the value play of the race.
Market Molecomb Stakes Betting Choice
Rocket Rodney could be the class horse in the race, but Walbank’s performance in this year’s Norfolk was a great effort at a higher level than this. If he can reproduce something similar, he could be the one to be one.
