On Monday, the meeting at the Churchill Downs racecourse features the 2022 Winning Colors for four-year-old fillies and older mares, where talented sprinter Sconsin makes a seasonal reappearance.
Winning Colors Stakes
Four-year-old fillies and older mares line up for this G3 event that offers the purse of $200,000. They are about to cover the distance of six furlongs, while the leading chance here seems to be the last year’s winner, Sconsin.
Trained by Gregory Foley, the five-year-old mare succeeded even at the G2 stage, as in 2020; she won the Eight Belles Stakes; moreover, she finished second in the G1 Derby City Distaff Stakes 2021, where she was bettered only by the marvellous Gamine. Also, her following results kept showing that Sconsin is a proper G2 performer who can deliver a great run among the elite when the race suits her.
Therefore, whenever she’s pointed to the black-type, Listed, or a G3 company, she needs to be considered the favorite. Still, she’s about to hit the track for the first time in 2022 since September, which could open the race to some of her rivals, but truth be told, none of them seems classy enough to threaten Sconsin with a slight exception in Novel Squall.
The John Alexander Ortiz bound four-year-old filly has collected five victories throughout her career but only in the Allowance races at best. In April, she faced some Listed competition and finished third out of six participants, upon which she returned to the Allowance stage and delivered an impressive effort when running down the field by more than nine lengths.
Such a display suggests that the daughter of Violence should be capable of achieving satisfactory results among Listed and G3 companies, and she has a great chance to prove it on Monday.
Regarding the rest of the field, a couple of four-year-old fillies, Euphoric and Li’l Tootsie have placed at the G2 scene. The former was second in the Miss Preakness Stakes in 2021, upon which she won an Allowance race.
However, she wasn’t able to repeat it since. The latter finished third in the last year’s Prioress Stakes, then won two Allowance events, and in 2022, she twice failed to make an impact in Listed races. Joyful Cadence was third in the G3 Miss Preakness, and in 2022, she bagged two Allowance wins; however, she was only third last time out when performing entirely below par. Tipsy Gal completes the field and it is difficult to see her fighting for any of the front spots.
