2023 Alliance Stakes & Twilight Derby Recap

Before the drama of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup, there were two fantastic races that kicked off Saturday’s Santa Anita card with the renewals of the 2023 Alliance Stakes and Twilight Derby.

The first race of the day was the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes, where Salesman handled the conditions best of all and cruised to an easy victory.

Next was the Twilight Derby where a highly competitive field of thirteen cantered down to post. The race fell to Seal Team who was able to confirm the promise of his recent Allowance victory and land the first graded prize of his career.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile and five eighths, dirt, open to three-year-old horses and older. Total prize pool: $250,000

  1. Salesman +250
  2. Win the Day +800
  3. Kiss Today Goodbye +500

Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card got off to a bang with Salesman producing the minor upset to win this year’s TAA Stakes. Sent off as the second favorite, most of the pre-race attention was on 2023 Belmont Cup winner Siskany, however, few would have expected the race to unfold as it did.

Winless since moving to America, Salesman produced a performance of the ages to win this year’s TAA in stunning style.

Showing terrific early speed, he hit the front early and wouldn’t see another horse for the rest of the race.

Under an expert ride from Flavien Prat, he gradually wound up the pace and halfway up the back straight had the race under his control.

With the rest of the field unable to live with the relentless gallop, Salesman turned for home with several lengths in hand. Hitting the home straight in the clear, he had left his rivals in the dust and went onto cruise to the finish line, winning by eight lengths.

  1. Seal Team +600
  2. Sliver Knott +500
  3. Webslinger +300

If the TAA was a procession, the Twilight Derby was anything but, with several horses battling it out all the way to the line.

In a wide-open betting heat, it was Seal Team who produced the best performance of his career to land this graded prize.

With the pace fast and furious, it was Watsonville who held a slim lead rounding the home turn, but there were challengers everywhere.

As Watsonville felt the pace, it was the favorite Webslinger who looked the most dangerous. Looking to back up his 2023 American Turf victory, he was joined by the heavily fancied Silver Knott and Seal Team.

With the line fast approaching, the three were matching strides and it came down to who wanted it more.

Picking up a seam on the outside, it was Seal Team who travelled the best of all and snuck ahead with just yards to run. Sticking his neck out at the line, he would go onto win narrowly with Silver Knott and Webslinger finishing back in second and third.
