2023 Ascot Gold Cup: Courage Mon Ami is Frankie’s best friend

The marquee G1 2023 Ascot Gold Cup was won by an old head and a new face, with box-office jockey Frankie Dettori embellishing his final year in the saddle with victory aboard the unbeaten Courage Mon Ami, who was making his stakes debut on his fourth start.

Ami is Frankie’s best friend

Frankie Dettori was the man of the hour at his final Royal Ascot when landing Thursday’s feature Gold Cup aboard the inexperienced Courage Mon Ami, who extended his unbeaten record to four on his stakes debut when overcoming the favoured Coltrane and 2021 winner Subjectivist in a thrilling finish.

The 15-2 fourth-choice was given a nerveless ride by Dettori, who brought him from far back between horses to run down Coltrane and lead at the furlong pole. There’s no quit about Coltrane and he kept fighting, but Courage Mon Ami had too many guns and won with a little in hand by three-quarters of a length, with the fading front-runner Subjectivist three and three-quarter lengths further back in third and Emily Dickinson fourth.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Dettori, who retires at the end of the year and was claiming his ninth Gold Cup. “The horse is still a baby but he picked up well when the other horse came back at him. He ran the perfect race – this is what it’s all about.”

It was the fourth Gold Cup for trainer John Gosden – who shares the licence with his son Thady – and the next step for Courage Mon Ami, who only made his debut in September, is likely to be the G1 Goodwood Cup over two miles on August 1.
