2022 Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath takes a class drop for master trainer D Wayne Lukas in a bid to get back in the winner’s circle at Oaklawn Park.

This race looks to center around the fitness of Clairiere who was last seen finishing third in the Breeders Cup Distaff at Keeneland in November and last year’s Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath who was fifth in that same race.

Looking at the drills of both of these top-class fillies and it looks like Secret Oath is working just that little bit sharper, but it’s a tough call.

Clairiere came from way back that day and was only beaten a head with Secret Oath another 5 lengths back. Secret Oath is a big filly and maybe at three she was still very weak, and we could see a different horse this year.

Lovely Ride and Le Da Vida both ran in the Grade 3 Bayakoa Stakes last time Oaklawn Park, so both have strong track form. Lovely Ride attempted to go gate to wire last time and we can expect the same tactics again, and of those two, she is the more fancied having beaten Le Da Vida the last three times they met.

We have some unexposed types stepping up the class ladder here, and the ones that look most interesting are Hot n Sultry and Interstate Daydream.

Hot n Sultry is very lightly raced and was a good winner of a minor stakes race last time when closing late to get up on the wire. She produced a career-best Beyer speed figure of 89 so is progressing. This is a big step up the class ladder, but after just five career starts, there is more to come from this daughter of Speightster and she has not been out of the first two in four runs here at Oaklawn Park.

Interstate Daydream is already a winner in this spot after taking down the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico last year. She also won the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks at Horseshoe Indianapolis two back. This is tougher than what she has faced so far but her trainer has a 24% strike rate with horses off the bench, and her recent drills have been sharp.

It is not an easy race to call with many of these coming back from layoffs, but it would be a surprise if Clairiere could not hit the board here and she will be the likely favorite.

However, the vote goes to SECRET OATH. She was a highly impressive winner of the Kentucky Oaks as a three-year-old and lost nothing in defeat in the Breeders Cup Distaff. Her recent drills have been very sharp and she may just improve past Clairiere this season.

Interstate Highway looks like a horse that is improving, and along with the pace horse Lovely Ride should be fighting for a spot on the board.
