2023 Bayakoa Stakes, Endeavour S, Tampa Bay S Odds

Lovely Ride looks to go gate to wire in the G3 2023 Bayakoa Stakes on Saturday, but will she be able to hold the late closing Le Da Vida? In the mean time Chad Brown’s Marketsegmentation looks to take the step up the class ladder for the Endeavour Stakes on Saturday and he’ll be joined in the field by the highly promising import from Ireland, Panama Red. Highly touted class dropper Emmanuel from the Todd Pletcher barn, seeks to regain his reputation after a poor run against Grade 1 foes when last seen

Bayakoa Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $250,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Dirt – 4-Year-Olds and Up for Fillies and Mares

Seven runners go to post for this top purse of a quarter of a million dollars and it looks to be a very tight race.

The early morning line favorite here is A Mo Reay (5/2) who has been in strong form and won a minor stakes race, and in the process, she produced a career-best Beyer figure of 88. Most of her races have been at the mile, but the stretch-out to an extra sixteenth should suit and she is a leading player here.

Her main danger looks to come from Ice Orchid (4/1) from the John Ortiz barn, and this is another that produced a career-best Beyer of 89 last time. She is a regular at Oaklawn Park with a record of 5-1-3-1 which shows she’ll handle the track with no problem. There is plenty of upside here as she has finished runner-up in this spot on the last two attempts and she should take a nice stalking position behind the likely speed set by Lovely Ride (3/1) and Powder River (5/1).

If we look at the last two mentioned then Powder River deserves a mention as she has been ultra-consistent, hitting the board in each of her last ten runs. However, they have come against slightly lesser foes and she could just be outclassed here.

Lovely Ride has the widest gate, but should have no problem getting across and dictating the speed. She tops the Beyer numbers here with a top speed rating of 91 and her run style means that Christian Torres can dictate from the front. She clearly holds a very strong chance, but the one negative is that she has tried this spot three times previously and has been well held each time.

Guana Cay (20/1) from the Eric Foster barn looks clearly outclassed here and will do well to grab a slice underneath, as would Graysonsmacho Girl who has hit the board just once in five starts here at Oaklawn.
However, one that could make a splash is Le Da Vida (7/2) who has had just four runs since coming from Chile and looks a likely closer late on.

It is a tight race with the top 5 on the morning line odds closely matched. Lovely Ride looks sure to be on the speed and although she has not produced the goods in this spot before, she should have enough here to hit the board.

The main pick though is LE DA VIDA who finished behind Lovely Ride and Ice Orchid last time but was closing in late, and was beaten just a length and three quarters. This smaller field will suit, and with a strong pace on the front end, she can pounce late for the win.

Ice Orchid has the best form in graded stakes company and can also hit the board.

Endeavour Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $175,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up for Fillies and Mares

Eleven runners are due to head to the gate at 3.55 pm ET for this competitive Grade 3 stakes race for fillies and mares, and a tough puzzle to solve.

The early morning line favorite is the Chad Brown-trained Marketsegmentation (3/1) This filly by American Pharoah has only had three starts, but has won two of those, including when beating winners last time. The mile and sixteenth is no problem and she has good tactical speed, so can make the pace or stalk just in behind.

Her main rival looks to be the Todd Pletcher-trained Scotish Star (4/1)who has run well in this spot previously. The question mark with her is the distance, with her best performances coming over a mile.

Arnaud Delacor pitches Panama Red (9/2) straight into graded stakes company after the horse has come from Ireland. Was well beaten in the Irish 1000 Guineas, but that would be light years ahead of this level, and she is better judged on strong closing effort in a Grade 3 in May 2022. Her work tab is nothing flashy heading into this stateside debut, but she has a class angle, and don’t be shocked if this filly hits the board.

Two fillies at bigger prices that look interesting are Ouraika (15/1) and She’s Gone (12/1)

Ouraika is the only graded stakes winner in this line-up, and having only had eight career starts, there is still plenty of upside. She won the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita in February 2022. She comes here off a long layoff, but two recent five furlongs drills have been sharp and the stretch-out looks to give some upside.

She’s Gone is the definite class in the race and has run well in better-class races the last two times. She is back from a sixty-day lay here, but trainer Victoria Oliver has a 17% strike rate with horses coming off this type of layoff and she has the blinkers on first time.

Others with a chance underneath include Spirit And Glory (6/1) and Surprisingly (8/1)

A really tough race to call, with many in with chances, but the Chad Brown favorite Marketsegmentation should be very tough to keep off the board. She’ll likely be close to the speed and should grab a share.

The tentative vote goes to SHE’S GONE. The form of her last two runs against tougher foes was very solid, and this class drop should enable her to at least hit the board, but at the early morning line odds, she is the clear value and could have too much class for these.

Ouraika, Panama Red, and Surprisingly can be fighting it out for a minor share underneath.

Tampa Bay Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $175,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Another very tough race to call with twelve due to go to post for the race named after Tampa Bay and plenty of back class shown by many of these runners.

We’ll kick off with the morning line favorite which is the Arnaud Delacore barn inmate Chez Pierre (3/1) who has had two starts since moving stateside and is unbeaten, winning by more than 5 lengths last time.

This gelding takes a stretch-out in distance today which gives plenty of upside. The big question is how will he fare against proven and much tougher rivals. The potential is there, but this is a tough assignment.

A couple of proven graded stakes performers here are Kentucky Ghost (5/1) and Winfromwithin (6/1) who both have solid back class.

These two met in at Monmouth Park last year and only half a length separated the pair, and it should be close once again.

Todd Pletcher and Javier Castellano have the lightly raced Emmanuel (4/1) here and the son of More Than Ready has already produced a strong level of form. He is three from six so far and all the other races were in much deeper waters, so he has a strong chance to get back in the winner’s circle and register a second graded stakes victory.

The six-year-old Field Pass (8/1) has to get a mention here. He has 9 wins from 32 starts and the majority of his racing has been at graded stakes level. He has plenty of back class having won five graded stakes, four Grade 3’s and a Grade 2, and he was beaten just over two lengths in this spot two back.

If you are an exotics player, then a couple that look of interest at bigger morning line odds are Mighty Heart (15/1) and Startingover (30/1)

Mighty Heart came back from a 60-day lay recently to win a $100k Optional Claimer to show his well-being and has not been disgraced in his previous two against tougher foes.

Startingover is another with back class having run well previously in Grade 2 company. He was a good second when last seen in November and comes here after a nine-week layoff and has fired in two nice drills on recent workouts.

Plenty in with chances and Kentucky Ghost looks like a solid option to hit the board. There will be plenty of speed on the front end and we should see this one closing from far back to grab a spot on the board.

The main pick has to be EMMANUEL who is still very much unexposed and he looks sure to give Javier Castellano a good ride. He was well beaten in the Saratoga Derby Invitational when last seen, but recent drills have been solid and he has a great gate post in six and could attempt to go gate-to-wire here.

Plenty that will be looking for a slice underneath and we like the big outsider Startingover to put in a strong claim for a podium finish here.
