2023 Beaumont Stakes & Palisades Stakes Recap

Two horses firmly on the upgrade dominated the stakes action at Keeneland on Sunday, with three-for-three track star Key Of Life signing for her first win at Graded level in the 2023 Beaumont Stakes, and Gaslight Dancer making his stakes breakthrough with a dazzling display of speed in the ungraded Palisades.

Beaumont Stakes

Key keeps up Keeneland streak G2, $400,000, 7f dirt, 3yo fillies

Keeneland is a happy hunting ground for the progressive Key Of Life, who took her unbeaten run at the track to three when going gate-to-wire in the Beaumont on Sunday, staying ahead of Interpolate and Stonewall Star to record her first victory at Graded level.

The 2-5 favorite broke on top under Flavien Prat and set scorching fractions, although the exertion told on her in the closing stages – on her first try over seven furlongs – and she was all out to turn back the late challenge of second-choice Interpolate by a neck, the two having drawn six and a quarter lengths clear of show horse Stonewall Star.

This was Key Of Life’s fifth win from eight starts, with three third-places filling out her resume. There were ten Road to the Kentucky Oaks qualifying points on offer to the winner in this final prep, but they are of no use to this excitingly fast filly.

“She likes Keeneland a lot,” said trainer Brad Cox, who is considering a trip away from Key Of Life’s home-sweet-home for the six-furlong G3 Miss Preakness at Pimlico on May 19.

Palisades Stakes

Dancer is foot-perfect, ungraded, $250,000, 5 1/2f turf, 3yo

Class relief made the difference in the Palisades, as Gaslight Dancer came back from G1 company to make his stakes breakthrough in dominant style, seeing off longshots Two Of A Kind and Chiringo with some comfort.

His previous start had been here in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf over a mile in November, but speed is Gaslight Dancer’s game, and the 6-1 fifth-choice made light of his five-month layoff.

He sat in behind the pace until Tyler Gaffalione pulled him out to challenge at the top of the lane, and he quickly surged clear to put the race in safe-keeping, getting home under a hand-ride by a length and a half from the rallying Two Of A Kind, who was two and a quarter lengths clear of Chiringo. The favorite Private Creed made little impact, finishing fifth.

“That was impressive,” said trainer Mike Maker. “Last year he was headstrong, but he settled nicely there and has all kinds of options now, over this distance or a little further.”

Gaslight Dancer, now two-for-five, was runner-up in the G3 Futurity at Aqueduct over six furlongs in October and sprints certainly seem to suit him best at present.
