2023 Canadian Stakes Odds, Field & Picks

Sunday at Woodbine is headlined by two fantastic races, the 2023 Canadian Stakes and Singspiel Stakes.

Last year’s Canadian Stakes winner Fev Rover returns in the hope that she will be able to defend her crown. However, she won’t have it all her own way as Canada’s Horse of 2022, Moira, will be looking for her first win of the year.

Breeders Cup Odds

In the Singspiel Stakes, Rock Emperor is likely to start as the favorite. On a losing run, he will be looking to improve on his sixth-place finish when last seen in the 2023 Arlington Million.

Canadian Stakes

Grade 2, 1 mile and an eighth, turf, open to fillies & mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $200,000

Seven talented horses are due to head down to post for the 2023 Canadian Stakes and back to defend her crown is Fev Rover.

Now five, she has been lightly raced by her expert trainer Mark Casse and has just had three runs so far this season, but two have resulted in victories.

A winner of both the 2023 Nassau Stakes and 2023 Beverly D Stakes, she has achieved levels of form that very few in this race can match. She will start as the horse they all need to beat.

Moira is Canada’s Reigning Horse of the Year, but her connections have been left frustrated so far this season as she has finished as the runner up in all three of her starts.

Worryingly, she comes up against two rivals who have already had her number so far this year in the form of Fev Rover and Miss Dracarys. Clearly talented, she won the 2022 Queen’s Plate and achieved a fifth-place finish in the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Her followers will be hoping that she can finally poke her head in front here.

Miss Dracarys was a convincing winner of the 2023 Dance Smartly Stakes

Her win in the Dance Smartly was her one and only start of 2023 and she showed there were no fitness concerns as she powered all the way to the line. Clearly thriving, she is bound to have a major say in proceedings.

Another horse who heads to Woodbine lightly raced is Skims. She has just had two starts so far this year with her season opener coming in the Grade 1 2023 Jenny Wiley Stakes where she finished fourth. She took the drop down to Allowance company last time out and won convincingly. She could be a decent option at a price.

Whoever Kazushi Kimura chooses to ride has to be taken incredibly seriously, and he will be on board the Christophe Clement trained Atomic Blonde

A classy performer back in her native Germany, she has had four starts since move Stateside but is yet to get her head in front. She finished behind Skims last time out so has form to overturn. Clearly talented, her connections will hope that this is the race where it all finally comes together.

Rounding out the field are Talbeyah and Ready Lady. Both will start at big prices and should be best watched on this occasion.

2023 Canadian Stakes Odds & Racing Pick

Despite the presence of several highly talented horses, Fev Rover’s recent form is on another level to her rivals. Her victory in the Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes was impressive and she is the one they will all need to beat.

Singspiel Stakes

Grade 3, 1 and a half miles, turf, open to horses aged three and over. Total prize pool: $125,000

A field of eight are due to head down to post for this year’s Singspiel Stakes.

In what is a tight looking betting contest, the favorite for the race looks set to be the Chad Brown trained Rock Emperor

Highly tried, it’s been a while since he last won a race, with his winless run now stretching to five.

To his credit, he has run in some high-class races and finished fourth in the 2023 Fort Marcy Stakes and finished sixth when last seen in the 2023 Arlington Million. Clearly capable, there will be many who will be confident of taking him on.

The most interesting horse in the field is last year’s winner, Ready For The Lady. Her win in the 2022 renewal was done in dramatic circumstances as she swooped late to bag the prize.

Since that breakthrough victory he hasn’t been seen again at this level. This has clearly been the target that his trainer Roger Attfield has been aiming for, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him run another big race.

For much of the 2022 renewal it looked like British Royalty would end up on top, but he would end up being denied in the closing stages.

Looking to go one place better this time around, he will need to produce something special as he has now gone ten starts without a win. A third-place finish in the 2023 Belmont Gold Cup does offer some hope to his followers, but he will need to produce more.

Likely to feature heavily in the betting is Town Cruise. Last seen in Graded company when finishing 5th in the Grade 1 2023 Woodbine Mile, he has been racing in Allowance company ever since and heads to Woodbine fresh off the back of a win. Yet to make his mark at this level, he could be a player at a price.

Mark Casse is one of Woodbines most legendary trainers and in this race he saddles Palazzi. Lightly raced this season, he has just had three runs, which has resulted in two wins.

A winner last time out, he finished ahead of the reopposing Malibu Mambo and will be looking for a first win at this level since 2021.

Both Dun Drum and Collective Force will round out the field and will start the race as outsiders.

2023 Singspiel Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

This year’s Singspiel Stakes looks set to be a highly competitive race. Rock Emperor is bound to be a popular selection, but his winless run is concerning. It could be worth a small play on Palazzi who has some solid recent form in comparison most in the lineup.
