2023 Centenary Sprint Cup Odds & Betting Picks

Can Wellington put the boot into his rivals once again and take home the G1 2023 Centenary Sprint Cup?

The Centenary Sprint Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $1,530,000 – 1200 meters (6 furlongs) – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Upward

We have an elite field of eight runners due to go to post for this $1.5 million prize and without a doubt, this is going to be billed as a duel between two of the best sprinters in Hong Kong with Wellington and Lucky Sweynesse tipped to battle it out for this big purse.

However, they might not have it all their own way as there are some very strong form lines in this race which makes it a tough puzzle to solve.

Wellington came out on top when a number of these met in the Longines Hong Kong Sprint back in December. He beat Sight Success by three-quarters of a length with Sky Field a further half-length back in third.

Others to run in that race that are also in today’s field include Courier Wonder (4th), Lucky Sweynesse (6th) and Duke Wai (11th)

Lucky Sweynesse didn’t seem to run to form then and is much better judged on his recent easy win in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup, a Grade 3 which he won easily giving weight away all around.

This race will be a tactical affair and it will likely be Sight Success that cuts out the early speed, but it will be interesting to see where the strong closers Duke Wai and Sky Field will be positioned in this much smaller field.

Sky Field has closed very strongly in his last two races and with Sight Success possibly going hard from the front, it could set up nicely for him.

Master Eight and Super Wealthy have already come up against many of these and just look a little outclassed today.

A really tough race to call, but Wellington looks like being the chalk here ahead of Lucky Sweynesse. Both should be in the firing line as they come down to the wire and it would be Wellington who just gets the vote of those two.

However, both will be short odds and the narrow vote goes to SKY FIELD, who in this smaller field, should be able to sit much closer to the speed and will definitely be kicking in the turbo late on. He’ll also be a bit of value on the boards.

Duke Wai is another who should get the perfect pace set up, and is another who will be closing late as they drive to the wire.

The Centenary Vase

Grade 3 – Purse $497,000 – 1800 meters (1 mile 1 furlong) – Turf – 3 Year-Olds and Up

Can Money Catcher and Silvestre De Sousa catch the gold medal again and go gate to wire and bag this $500,000 race?

Just six go to the gate for this Grade 3 over 1800 meters and it looks like the prolific winner and aptly named Money Catcher will be the chalk for this Grade 3 event. He went gate to wire last time in this spot and we can expect similar tactics from jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

He is not quite top class but had run well in previous attempts against tougher, and at this level, he will be very tough to beat.

Senor Toba is one that will definitely put up a strong challenge. He tried to go gate to wire last time in the prestigious Grade 1 Hong Kong Vase but was just outclassed late. Taking a class drop today, and getting a big weight pull with Money Catcher on their run together in the Sa Sa Ladies Purse, he looks sure to give the chalk plenty to think about.

Ka Ying Star is likely to be a big price longshot here, but he does add an interesting element here, as he likes to be on the speed and could well cause problems for Money Catcher.

Glorious Dragon ran in the Hong Kong Cup along with Ka Ying Star and positioned nicely in fourth, however, as they entered the home stretch and set down or the drive, he was bumped and suffered interference, and that run can be upgraded. He holds Ka Ying Star on that form.

The little horse Running Glory gets plenty of weight here, and that puts him in with a chance based on the handicap, but he is in here against some classier rivals than he normally faces while the lowest-rated horse Looking Great looks to have a little to find on the official handicap, but he did beat Running Glory when winning the Chek Keng Handicap earlier this year.

The highest-rated horse in the field is Glorious Dragon, but he was well-held behind Money Catcher and Looking Great last time. However, he is 5 lbs better off with the winner and this smaller field will suit him well.

Plenty in with chances, and being a handicap, we have to take that into consideration. Money Catcher continues in good form and is likely to be the favorite, but with others in the field who like to go forward, this will not be straightforward and he may have to settle for a spot on the board.

The horse we like is SENOR TOBA who gets some major class relief and is way better off at the weights with Money Catcher based on their run three back.

Glorious Dragon and Looking Great have solid chances to hit the board and grab a slice underneath.
