Coral Charge Sprint Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $100,000 – 5 furlongs 10 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

As they left the stalls, the chalk Marshman was very slowly away, but as expected it was Diligent Harry that was on the speed early.

Also just stalking the early speed was the eventual winner EQUALITY and that one was followed closely by Lady Hermana. The pace was fast and Diligent Harry was leading down the center of the track from Equality, while all on his own on the standside rail was the long shot Existent.

As they went past halfway it was here the Equality edged to the lead, and at the two-furlong pole, he quickened and widened by length, while in behind, the chalk Marshman had started to make his move, but his effort quickly flattened out.

However, at the furlong pole, William Buick asked his mount for more and he quickened two lengths clear with Makarova now throwing down a strong challenge.

But Buick had got first run, and Equality was very strong in the finish and hit the wire a length and a half clear of the fast-closing Makarova.

Tiber Flow was switched inside and closed late for the third spot, while the well-fancied Annaf who met traffic problems at the two-furlong pole, closed strongly between rivals to finish in the fourth spot

Coral Eclipse Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $938,000 – 1 mile 1 furlong 209 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

Paddington broke sharply under Ryan Moore but the jockey soon reined his mount back and allowed West Wind Blows to move to the speed.

However, the pace was steady and Moore was content to stalk the leader with main rival Emily Upjohn three lengths away, and the last of the quartet Dubai Honour five lengths from the speed.

As they went down the backstretch the leader injected some speed but his three rivals were not panicking.

All of the runners had shied away from the inside rail looking for better ground after the earlier races had cut up the Sandown turf.

It was cat and mouse as they entered the long stretch with West Wind Blows still two lengths clear of Paddington in second, with the other two rivals close up.

It was at the two-furlong pole that Moore asked the eventual winner PADDINGTON for more, and he responded by passing the long-time leader. However, Detorri on Emily Upjohn had the move covered, and what was billed as a match race was now taking shape.

Paddington responded to Moore’s urgings to widen by a length but Detorri still looked dangerous.

As they hit the furlong marker, the top two on the board settled down to battle to the wire, but as hard as Detorri tried he could not get past the 3-year-old, who battled bravely to win by half a length.

Emily Upjohn finished second,, giving the winner 7 lbs which was a great effort, while West Wind Blows held well for the third spot in front of Dubai Honour.
