Grade 1 – Purse $516,000 – 1 mile 4 furlongs 6 yards – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Only five went to the gate to contest this half-a-million-dollar-plus purse and it was no surprise to see Point Lonsdale sent to the speed by Ryan Moore as this one looked a certain stayer.

However, last year’s Derby third Hurricane Lane was not letting the Ballydoyle runner have it all his own way, and Will Buick soon got inside Moore as these two settled down to make this a strong pace.

The chalk Westover was traveling nicely in hand for Rob Hornby with the German raider Tunnes close up in the three-lane in the fourth spot, with the eventual winner EMILY UPJOHN being held up for a late closing run under Detorri.

As they wheeled downhill and into the stretch with four furlongs to run there were just four lengths covering the field and Point Lonsdale made his bid for glory and was followed through by Westover who appeared to be traveling in hand under Hornby.

However, Detorri had bought Emily Upjohn widest of all into the stretch, and when he pressed the button the response was electrifying and she widened by three lengths. Westover tried but it was all in vain as Detorri punched his mount out and she was geared down at the wire to win by a length and three quarters with Point Lonsdale another seven and a half lengths back in third with Tunnes fourth and Hurricane Lane last of the five runners.

2023 Oaks Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $666,000 – 1 mile 4 Furlongs 6 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Old Fillies

Frankie Dettori wins his second classic of the season as Soul Sister backs up her devasting win in the Musidora Stakes at York by showing another devastating turn of speed to win The Oaks!

There was drama at the start as Running Lion was rowdy at the gate and was in the process of being removed by the handlers to be checked over by the vet team. However, she shook loose of the handler and the starter went without the Gosden runner.

As the rest of the field left the starting gates it was Sea Of Roses leading from Bright Diamond with the chalk Savethelastdance getting a nice stalking position in third.

Detorri had broken well on the eventual winner SOUL SISTER but he was content to rein her back into mid-pack and follow his main rival.

As they reached the far turn into the stretch it was still Sea Of Roses leading, but at this point, the chalk came under a drive from Moore and was not going anywhere fast, while Detorri had drifted back to the last spot on Soul Sister but still traveling in hand.

The race changed with two furlongs to run as first Caernarfon took the lead only to be quickly swept aside by Detorri and Soul Sister who quickened smartly to widen by two lengths. To her credit, Savethelastdance battled gamely to close again and take second ahead of the 40/1 longshot Caernarfon.

It was a further eight and a half lengths back to the fourth horse Maman Joon.

2023 Derby Stakes

Grade 1 – Purse $1,827,000 – 1 mile 4 furlongs 6 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Olds

After his abysmal run in the 2000 Guineas, Auguste Rodin answered his critics in no uncertain terms by powering to Derby glory, getting up in the shadows of the wire!

As the betting suggested, this was one of the most wide-open Derby races in recent years with the betting at 4/1 the field.

From the gates, it was the chalk Arrest who led the field from Passenger and Dubai Mile.

However, after just a couple of furlongs, the pair from the Ballydoyle Barn, Adelaide River, and San Antonio took it up and were there as pacemakers for the barn’s big gun and eventual winner AUGUSTE RODIN.

As they made their way out of the back stretch on the unique horseshoe-shaped track, The Ballydoyle pair quicked the speed and the chalk Arrest followed them through but as he did he seemed to bobble and he was soon backing out of it.

Meanwhile, Military Order had made ground behind the leaders with the 66/1 longshot King Of Steel pitching inside and making eye-catching progress.

They hit the furlong pole and King Of Steel widened by two lengths and we had a mighty upset on the cards but Moore produced Auguste Rodin wide and late and he got to King Of Steel just 50 yards from the wire to win by half a length.

White Birch ran a mighty race to finish third having been last into the stretch with Sprewell finishing in the fourth spot.
