2023 Cougar II Stakes & Wickerr Stakes Recap

Order And Law causes a big odds upset as the chalk Kiss Today Goodbye fails to fire and is eased and walked off the track. Here the 2023 Cougar II Stakes & Wickerr Stakes Recap!

Cougar II Stakes

Grade 3 – Purse $125,000 – 1 1/2 miles – Dirt – 3-Year-Olds and Up

As expected, it was Azul Coast and Bye Bye Bobby who were smartly away and they set the pace going into the far turn for the first time.

As they entered the stretch for the first time, the eventual winner ORDER AND LAW had moved into a stalking position in the three lane but the field were only seperated by five lengths as the pace was slow.

The pace quickened halfway down the backstretch and Kitten Mischief made a move in between the front two to press Azul Coast for the lead. Meanwhile, the chalk Kiss Today Goodbye was being ridden chill at the back of the pack.

Off the far turn and into the stretch and Bye Bye Bobby came to the lead but he was immediately challenged by Order and Law, while Azul Coast was battling bravely on the rail.

Order and Law took it up with an eighth to the wire and widened even further at the sixteenth to go on and win by two and a quarter lengths from Azul Coast with Bye Bye Bobby a further three lengths down in third spot.

A mention must be made of the fourth Ghazaaly. He was way back on the far turn but closed late, and is one to watch if taking a class drop.

Wickerr Stakes

Stakes – Purse $100,000 – 1 mile – Turf– 3-Year-Old and Up

Du Jour overcomes traffic problems at the top of the stretch to claim the win right under the wire with a sensational stretch close.

As the gates opened it was an even start and from the inside it was Lamplighter Jack and from his outside draw, I’m A Gambler who led into the short run to the clubhouse turn.

Stalking that pair into the backstretch were the eventual runner-up Flavius and Evening Sun had a nice stalking position just two back on the inside rail.

At this point, last year’s winner Irideo was in the last spot, some twelve lengths off the speed.

Halfway down the back-stretch and bowling along at a strong pace was Lamplighter Jack, while in behind, the chalk Cathkin Peak had moved into third and was in hand under Rispoli.

Meanwhile, the eventual winner DU JOUR had a mid-pack sit but was starting to make ground.

As they went into the far turn and headed for the stretch drive it was here that I’m A Gambler took over but he was soon challenged and passed by Flavius.

Du Jour hit traffic problems at the top of the stretch but shook free as a gap opened on the rail. Hernandez still had work to do with a wall of horses in front of him but he found a seam with a sixteenth to go and grabbed Flavius right under the wire to win by fast widening length and a half.

I’m A Gambler held well for third with Hit The Road holding the strong closing Cash Equity for the fourth spot.
