2023 Delaware Handicap Odds & Betting Picks

The 86th running of the Delaware Handicap headlines this Saturday’s Delaware Park card. Six runners having been declared for the contest.

The early favorite for the race is the Brad Cox trained Idiomatic. A winner of four of her last five starts, she is looking for her second graded victory of 2023.

Grade 2, 1 3/16 miles, Dirt, open to fillies and mares aged three and over. Total prize pool: $500,000

Idiomatic will start the 2023 Delaware Handicap as the horse they all need to beat. Having won five of her eight career starts, Idiomatic took a big step forward when a good winner of the 2023 Grade 3 Shawnee Stakes. That was Idiomatic’s first graded win and cemented the promise she showed when running a good second in the 2023 Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes.

She clearly boasts the best form in the book, and she looks primed for another graded victory.

Hoping to cause Idiomatic some problems will be the Todd Pletcher trained Classy Edition. A winner of three of her last four starts, like Idiomatic, she is looking to land her second graded prize of 2023 following a dominating success in the 2023 Grade Royal Delta Stakes.

Following her graded breakthrough, she found life tough in the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes but bounced back nicely to win the 2023 Critical Eye Stakes last time out. Certainly more than capable of winning this contest, she could be a nice alternative to those wanting to take on the favorite.

Rounding out the top three in the betting is the Robert Reid Jr trained Morning Matcha. An intriguing horse, she has won just two of her last six starts, however she does boast some impressive form when finishing as the runner up in the 2022 Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes.

She comes into this race lightly raced having just had two starts so far this year. Only just denied last time out in the 2023 Obeah Stakes she will be looking for her second win of the year following her win in her season opening race of 2023, the Unique Bella Stakes.

Outside of the top three, Battle Bling will be hoping to make her mark. A Stakes winner in the past, she is yet to land a graded prize. She heads into the race with some potential fitness concerns and will be having her first run since February.

Royal Take Charge, is by far the least exposed horse in this field. She has only had four career starts but has won three of those races. All her victories have come in Allowance company and although this represents a big step up in class, she could have the quality to compete.

Rounding out the field is the Rodolfo Sanchez trained GameStonks. Yet to win a graded prize, eyebrows were raised when she took a huge step up in class to run in the 2023 Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes. She came last in that contest but did hold her own for much of the race. Back in calmer waters here, it’s hard to know what that form represents, but if you like to back a long shot she could be the horse for you.

2023 Delaware Handicap Odds & Betting Pick

Despite this year’s Delaware Handicap containing just six runners, it looks like a fascinating renewal. Based on form and class, Idiomatic’s connections will be hopeful of another big run. Whilst she should take all the beating, Classy Edition could be the best value angle option of the race.
