Breeders Cup Odds

Delaware Oaks

Grade 3 – Purse $300,000 – 1 1/16 miles – Dirt – 3-Year-Old Fillies

A great lineup with a mix of class droppers and horses on the way up the food chain, and the early morning line chalk is Miracle 3/1 from the Todd Pletcher barn.

This one ran a fine race last time when finishing second in The Bouwerie Stakes when clear of the rest, and she was gaining late that day behind Downtown Mischief. Her two previous runs were against tougher foes but she again ran well when second in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes and this mile and sixteenth trip looks ideal for her and she could try and go gate to wire.

One of her biggest rivals looks sure to be the class dropper Promiseher America 5/1 who was well held in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks but had previously won in this spot when taking the Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct. She’ll likely stalk the early speed, and this cutback in distance looks positive in what looks sure to be a fast run race.

One of the least exposed runners here is Fireline 7/2, and this filly looks sure to be a big danger to the chalk. She was well beaten the first time on the slop but broke the maiden tag next time when slamming her rivals by more than thirteen lengths. She showed that was no fluke when stepping up the class ladder to go two from two when winning a $50k OC the first time against winners. This needs a serious jolt of improvement from the Chad Brown filly, and Brown has a 27% strike rate with horses that won last time.

Looking at some of the long shots that could make a splash, and Cats Inthe Timber 10/1 looks of interest. She has already beaten a number of these and gets a class drop after finishing well beaten in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico. These are much calmer waters.

Another to mention is Balpool 6/1 from the Rob Atras barn who is another taking a class drop. She had won her previous two starts winning a $62k OC before stepping up in class to take a minor stakes race, both wins coming at Aqueduct.

She closed late in the Black Eyed Susan, and although she cuts back in distance, she looks like a leading player here.

Delaware Oaks Odds & Betting Pick

Miracle looks to be a worthy favorite and with the tactics sure to be a gate-to-wire attempt, she could go all the way. She looks sure to hit the board here but at 3/1 is she value in this tight field?

The strong vote goes to the class dropper BALPOOL. Her form in the Black Eyed Susan is maybe the best on offer, and she is not far off the top here with an 84 Beyer Speed figure.

The improving Fireline and Promiseher America both hold strong chances and should at least be fighting for a spot on the board and a slice of this valuable purse.

Robert Dick Memorial Stakes

Stakes – Purse $250,000 – 1 and 3/8 miles – Turf– 3-Year-Old and Up – Fillies and Mares

Can Viareggio gain a first stateside graded stakes success now taking some serious class relief after being beaten just over two lengths in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita last time?

A race for the staying types and we have a very competitive field assembled with the likely chalk being Miss Yearwood at around the 4/1 mark on the early morning line odds.

She is still to win at the graded stakes level after four attempts but did finish a close third when beaten a length and a quarter in the Grade 3 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational at Belmont in September. She was a late closer that day over a mile and a quarter.

She has since taken a class drop to win her last two starts over a mile and a half and looks a big danger in what looks like a field high in quantity but lacking in graded stakes quality.

One of her main foes will be the Brendan Walsh-trained Viareggio 9/2 who is a recent import from Ireland and broke the stateside maiden tag first time when taking an Allowance contest at Keeneland back in April. She then stepped up the class ladder and acquitted herself with flying colors to finish fourth in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita just over a month ago.

That is classy form and as a pace stalker, she could just be better positioned than Miss Yearwood when the pace quickens at the end of the backstretch.

We mentioned this is short on quality but one that could mix it with the top two is the Italian graded stakes winner Sopran Basilea 6/1. She won a Grade 3 in Italy before shipping stateside and her first run here showed there is plenty of upside on today’s stretch-out to a mile and three-eighths.

She finished second in the Grade 3 Galorett Stakes at Pimlico in May and rallied late. The barn has a 25% strike rate with horses coming in two off a 180-day lay, and she is respected.

Outside these three, then a couple of the longshots on the board that have a chance underneath are Frivole 10/1 who won an allowance contest on her first start on these shores, and Talbeyah 12/1 who was behind Miss Yearwood last time but did not have the run of the race.

Robert Dick Memorial Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

Miss Yearwood may be the early chalk here but her run style means she will have to pass plenty of rivals in the latter part of the race and traffic problems might be the issue. She is a strong closer and should hit the board here.

A clear vote goes to Brendan Walsh’s VIAREGGIO who has run well on both starts and gets some significant class relief.

Both Sopran Basilea and Talbeyah can be fighting it out for a slice of the $250k purse.
