Can Far Bridge take advantage of the class drop today?

Todd Pletcher’s Far Bridge 8/5 is the early morning line chalk and was unlucky not to make it back-to-back Grade 1 wins last time when finishing third in the Saratoga Derby Invitational when caught four wide around the far turn. He had previously come with a late closing effort to win the 2023 Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational (first graded stakes win) and this is a definite class drop today.

Tactically, he’ll be closer to the tail of the field early and will need to be sharper at the gate to try and get a good position around the sharp Kentucky Downs clubhouse turn.

No doubt the long stretch and extra yardage are plus points. It’s just a case of if he can get rolling soon enough to reel in the pace.

His biggest rivals comes in the shape of the classy Red Route One 7/2, who is another late closer but does have the benefit of already having run and won here at Kentucky Downs when breaking the maiden tag on his second start.

He heads into this assignment in top form having won the 2023 Grade 3 West Virginia Derby coming from twelve lengths off the speed to go clear in the final furlong and win geared down.

It’s important to note that he was contesting the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes earlier in the year and is a very big danger to the chalk.

These top two have the best form but they are both closers and a horse that is likely to be on the speed is Wizard Of Westwood 15/1. He was behind Far Bridge when they last met and is likely to just be hanging around until they hit the top of the stretch.

The other two that look of interest are Highway Robber 6/1 and Battle Of Normandy 20/1.

Highway Robber broke the maiden tag first time, and then took a step forward on his fourth start to take an Allowance contest at Ellis Park. He went back to that venue last time to contest the 2023 Preview Dueling Grounds Derby and just failed to nail Wadsworth under the wire after coming from last spot, and he is another closer here.

Far Bridge is sure to be a strong pick with many race pickers and has a fine chance with the class drop but his slow starts may mean just a board finish today.

The selection is RED ROUTE ONE who has already won at this track and has some very classy back form which may just be better than the chalk.

Both Highway Robber and Battle of Normandy should be in the mix for a share of this $1 million purse.

Dueling Grounds Oaks

Stakes – Purse $1,000,000 – 1 mile 5/16 furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Old Fillies

Can Safeen go back to back and take the lions share of this $1 million purse?

A strong field of twelve fillies go to post and it is Safeen 7/2 who is the narrow favorite here.

She won the 2023 Grade 3 Pucker Up Stakes last time when battling gamely in the stretch to deny the consistent Bling.

She traveled nicely down the backstretch, and although the leader kicked at the top of the stretch, the Kennealy barn inmate showed plenty of guts to get up just 50 yards from the wire.

That was her first graded stakes success but it is key to note she has hit the board on all seven tries, winning three of those in the process. She is an improving filly and will be a tough foe for all here.

Her main rival on the board is the Brad Cox-trained Flashy Gem 4/1 who was well beaten in the 2023 Grade 2 Edgewood Stakes back in May, but has run twice since in calmer waters, and was a winner last time when taking a $50k Optional Claimer.

That win came after a sixty-day layoff and she will be 100% fit and ready for this tougher assignment.

Another that is high up on the morning line odds is Mrs Astor 5/1who was also beaten in graded stakes company two back when finishing third in the 2023 Grade 3 Regret Stakes at Churchill Downs, but it is important to note she has already beaten the chalk when they met in an Allowance contest back in April.

One of the longshots of interest is Freydis The Red 12/1 who was third in the Pucker Up Stakes after trailing the field early and then having to be pitched into the five lane to make her bid. She was outsped early in the stretch but closed late and fast and was only two lengths adrift of Safeen at the wire.

She gets extra distance today and is most definitely a player here along with Sabalenka 20/1 who is a winner at this track and should be included in exotics.

Safeen is a horse on the upgrade and having run well at this track before, will be very tough to keep off the board.

However, the vote goes to FREYDIS THE RED who came from far back last time and looks sure to appreciate the stretchout in distance.

Flashy Gem, Mrs. Astor, and the big longshot Sabalenka should be battling to hit the board here.
