2023 Epsom Derby Odds, Field and Picks

We have a very competitive field for this 2023 Epsom Derby with the chalk Auguste Rodin from the Aidan O’Brien barn.

Epsom Derby

Grade 1 – Purse $1,827,000 – 1 mile 4 furlongs 6 yards – Turf – 3-Year-Olds

We have to kick off with the Ballydoyle runner because he ran so badly in the 2000 Guineas that it is amazing he is even running let alone being the chalk and I think it will be a surprise if he can beat some of these already proven Derby Trial winners.

Military Order’s win in the Listed Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield was on the Polytrack but he had previously won on the turf when breaking the maiden tag on his second start as a two-year-old and then again when landing a novice stakes at Newbury.

His win in the Derby Trial Stakes proved he stays this distance and he was very strong in the finish that day when beating another of today’s rivals Waipiro by a length and a quarter. It should be interesting from the speed angle, as it’s likely Waipiro will be one of the runners trying to go gate to the wire.

The Foxes won an interesting trial at York when taking the Group 2 Dante Stakes where White Birch and Passenger were just behind in second and third. The race was run at a strong pace and The Foxes stalked the pace into the home straight and hit the front just a hundred yards to the wire but was all out to hold White Birch by a neck.

However, the one to take out of the race was Passenger who met traffic problems multiple times in the last two furlongs and that was a very promising run going straight from his maiden breaker to a Grade 2 and he is from last years Derby-winning barn of Sir Michael Stoute.

Outside of the challenge of the O’Brien barn, the other Irish horse that is of interest is Sprewell trained by Jessica Harrington. This colt only broke the maiden tag two back (third career start) but next time won the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes showing sharp closing speed after being held up in mid-pack. That form is as good as any of the other trials and he has a solid chance.

The final one we should mention is Arrest who was an impressive winner of the Group 3 Chester Vase when trouncing his rivals by six and a half lengths. He is a big rangy colt, and it remains to be seen if he can cope with the undulations of Epsom racecourse but his form stacks up well.

His last run as a two-year-old was in the Group 1 Criterium St Cloud where he was beaten just a head by the subsequent 2000 Guineas fifth Dubai Mile, form that is very solid

A fascinating race but I just cannot see how Auguste Rodin is the favorite after such a poor run last time, which means there is value to be found elsewhere.

Waipiro looks sure to try and make a bold bid to go gate to wire and he could well stick around long enough to be involved when the cameraman takes the pictures.

But the key race is the Dante Stakes at York and it’s PASSENGER who gets the vote. He was unlucky there and was not given an overly hard race on just his second racecourse appearance. Trainer Stoute is a master at preparing lightly raced horses for this the Blue Riband of British Racing and he is our main pick.

Military Order, Arrest, and White Birch should be pitching for a slice underneath.
