2023 Fair Grounds Stakes & Mineshaft Stakes Recap

The 2023 Fair Grounds Stakes and Mineshaft Stakes formed part of an excellent card at Fair Grounds this past Saturday.

A wide-open Grade 3, this year’s renewal of the Mineshaft saw nine head down to post, with the Brad Cox-trained Tawny Port just shading the betting. Tawny Port was looking to land the third Grade 3 race of his career, but he would end up running poorly. The race would be decided in the shadows of the post, with the Todd Pletcher-trained Pioneer of Medina edging out the Bret Calhoun-trained Mr. Wireless in a thriller of a finish.

The Fair Grounds Stakes saw eight horses take to the turf to battle it out for this year’s renewal. All eyes were on the Kenny McPeek-trained Tiz The Bomb who was making his first racetrack appearance in over six months. Despite the presence of Tiz The Bomb, he wouldn’t play a part in the race, with Two Emmys coming out on top in what was a dominant gate-to-wire performance.

Mineshaft Stakes

Grade 3, 1 1/16 mile, Dirt, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $250,000

  1. Pioneer Of Medina
  2. Mr Wireless
  3. English Tavern

In a wide-open renewal, all nine horses would have fancied their chances in this year’s Mineshaft.

In what was an even break, it was the Dallas Stewart-trained Host The Gold who led the field until the home turn. Keen to keep the leader up to his work was Run Classic with Pioneer Of Medina nestled in just behind.

It was Run Classic who made the first move, shifting gears as the horses rounded the home turn. Pioneer of Medina tracked his every step and the two horses prepared for battle as they approached the final few furlongs.

Keen to ensure the top two didn’t get too far ahead, Mr. Wireless made his surge and as the runners hit the furlong pole Run Classic, Pioneer Of Medina and Mr. Wireless were neck and neck across the track. It was Run Classic who was the first to crack, leaving the race between Pioneer Of Medina and Mr. Wireless.

With the two matching each other stride for stride, it was a race that was settled by the finest of margins with Pioneer of Medina timing the bob to win by a nose.

Despite dropping back, Run Classic did enough to narrowly hold onto third place.

Fair Grounds Stakes

Grade 3, 1 1/8 mile, Turf, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $150,000.

  1. Two Emmys
  2. Gentle Soul
  3. English Tavern

Eight horses lined up for this year’s renewal of the Fair Ground Stakes. Much of the pre-race focus was on the Kenny McPeek-trained Tiz The Bomb, who was making his first appearance in over six months following a tendon injury.

However, it wouldn’t be Tiz The Bomb’s day as Two Emmys would win his second race in his last three attempts with a dominant gate-to-wire showing.

A former winner of the Grade 1 Mr D Stakes back in 2021, Two Emmys was allowed a soft lead out in front and dictated the fractions superbly.

Keen to keep the pace of the race honest, a few horses looked like they were in trouble, with only last year’s winner Calvary Charge looking like he could handle the fast and ferocious pace. However, it was clear he had done too much too soon, and he soon found the pace too hot to handle, dropping away as Two Emmys hit the home turn.

Pixelate and Tiz The Bomb were the next to crack under the pressure, affording Two Emmys a comfortable lead out in front. With very few challengers emerging from the back of the pack, Two Emmys kicked again and would go onto win this year’s Fair Ground Stakes by almost five lengths.

In a fast and furious finish behind, it was Gentle Soul and English Tavern who would fill the minor places.
