2023 Fantasy Stakes & Gulfstream Park Oaks Recap

There is now a solid, worthy favorite for the Kentucky Oaks in the shape of Wet Paint, who kept up her perfect record at Oaklawn Park this year when cruising home in the 2023 Fantasy Stakes on Saturday afternoon. She will be joined at Churchill Downs next month by Affirmative Lady, who was just as impressive when making her stakes breakthrough in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks.

Gulfstream Park Oaks

It’s a ‘yes’ from Affirmative

G2, $250,000, 1m 1/16 dirt, 3yo fillies

Talk about making up for lost time. Winless in four starts before coming to Gulfstream Park, Affirmative Lady is now two-for-two in Florida and clinched a spot in the Kentucky Oaks when coming home a comfortable winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks from Sacred Wish and Flakes.

Blinkers, stretching out and a little winter sunshine have made the difference, but the 8-1 fifth-choice was under a Luis Saez drive on the home turn and seemed to be in trouble. Then the overdrive kicked in, and she surged past the front-running longshot Flakes and drew off to win by two lengths from the hard-charging Sacred Wish, who grabbed the ‘place’ spot by a head. The favored Miracle made little impression as a well-beaten fifth.

“I think she wants to go further,” said trainer Graham Motion. “I think she’ll really appreciate a mile and an eighth.”

That’s what the daughter of Arrogate will get next time at Churchill Downs, after collecting the 100 RTKO qualifying points on offer to the winner. Affirmative Lady is 15-1 for the big race on the JazzSports future book.

2023 Fantasy Stakes

Wet Paint shines again

G3, $600,000, 1m 1/16 dirt, 3yo fillies, Oaklawn Park

It’s been a perfect year so far for Wet Paint, who signed for a three-timer and sealed her place in the Kentucky Oaks when producing another irrepressible stretch run to take the 2023 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park, much too strong for longshots Taxed and Olivia Twist.

The 3-5 favorite takes time to warm up and she was stone last under a patient Flavien Prat until past halfway, but when she warms up she really sizzles and the race was as good as over when she began to inhale her rivals around the turn. She cruised to the lead with a furlong to run and kept rolling to win by two and a half lengths, with Taxed coming along late to get second by a half-length from Olivia Twist.

“She doesn’t need to get involved early,” said trainer Brad Cox of the Godolphin filly, who picked up 100 RTKO qualifying points for this success. “When you ask her to go, she really, really accelerates.”

Wet Paint’s gleaming resume has vaulted her to the top of the Jazz Sports future book on the Kentucky Oaks, the daughter of Blame now a 5-2 shot to take her streak to four at Churchill Downs next month.
