2023 Forego Stakes & H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Recap

Two G1s over seven furlongs generated enormously different emotions at Saratoga on Saturday. The tough cookie Gunite lifted the heart with another brave display to win the 2023 Forego Stakes, but an hour later the whole racetrack was stunned into silence when New York Thunder broke a leg with victory in his grasp in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial; the race went to One In Vermillion.

Gunite gets it right

Revenge was sweet for Gunite as he turned in a typically gutsy performance to win the Forego at Saratoga on Saturday, getting the better of champion sprinter Elite Power at the third attempt, with the runner-up’s barnmate High Oak third.

Elite Power had beaten him in Saudi Arabia and here at the Spa on their two encounters and was odds-on to do so again and stretch his winning streak to nine, but this time 6-5 shot Gunite swept him aside with a powerful display of front-running under Tyler Gaffalione.

Gunite went straight to the lead and set only boilerplate fractions before winding up the gallop at the top of the lane. Elite Power went to the rail to challenge and got within a half-length, but Gunite is a hard horse to get by and he pulled out more, drawing off to win by a length and three-quarters. High Oak moved through late, four lengths further back in third.

“He’s a very special horse,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “Today he proved how good he is. Seven-eighths is his distance, that is ideal for him.”

This was Gunite’s second G1 score over course and distance following the 2021 Hopeful, and he has never been out of the first two in six starts at the Spa. He will likely have one more run before taking on Elite Power again in the six-furlong Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Vermillion takes the prize

Tragedy hit Saratoga yet again in what has been a very troubled meet when New York Thunder, well clear and on his way to victory in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial, broke a leg at the sixteenth-pole and was euthanized on the track. The race was won by 19-1 longshot One In Vermillion, from Verifying and Arabian Lion.

New York Thunder, the 6-4 favourite, had led from the gate and was five lengths clear at the stretch call before calamity struck. His rider Tyler Gaffalione was not injured.

One In Vermillion was last early but came through to win by a length and three-quarters under Irad Ortiz, with Verifying a length and a half clear of the fading Arabian Lion. It was by far the biggest win of One In Vermillion’s career and his first at Graded-stakes level, also the case for his trainer Esteban Martinez.
