2023 Frizette Stakes Odds & Racing Picks

Some outstanding fillies have won the G1 Frizette Stakes, one of the highlights on a stakes-heavy Saturday at Aqueduct, and although this year’s crop – including Saratoga maiden winners Life Talk, Emery and Just FYI – do not have much stakes experience there is plenty of promise on show. Frizette Stakes

G1, $400,000, 1m dirt, 2yo fillies, 2.12pm ET

It is a short field for the Frizette at Aqueduct on Saturday and one that is rather short on obvious quality too, although there is plenty of room for improvement among the half-dozen runners chasing a paid berth into the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Todd Pletcher has won the Frizette four times, including last year, and puts Saratoga maiden winner Life Talk (9-5) in the gate. She was impressive when romping by six and a half lengths at the Spa over a mile, improving for her debut experience and for stretching out, and given the strength of her barn it may be notable that she is the chosen one.

Just as eyecatching at the Spa was Emery (2-1), who got it right first time over six furlongs, clearing away from more experienced rivals to score by five and three-quarter lengths in a decent time over a muddy track, which could be a pertinent factor as rain is forecast for the weekend.

On pedigree the extra yardage is a positive and she may be a little further forward than Just FYI (3-1), who also made a successful debut at Saratoga. She was always close up before rallying to get there in the last jump and win by a head over six furlongs, and this cleverly named daughter of Justify should also relish stretching out.

The Godolphin filly Central Avenue (10-1) is another debut winner, although she got hers in the lesser surroundings of Colonial Downs, where she started slowly and finished much faster to get the seven-furlong prize by a half-length.

The runner-up has boosted the form with a recent victory, although the third horse is a four-race maiden, and given her connections Central Avenue has to be of interest.

The lone entry with stakes experience is Princess Indy (15-1), who was beaten more than 14 lengths when a longshot fifth behind the high-class Brightwork in the 2023 G3 Adirondack at Saratoga, but rebounded when dropped to a stakes and moved up in distance next time.

She showed plenty of courage over the Monmouth Park mile to run down the long-time leader and win going away by a length and a half, and although it was not the best stakes ever run she could do no more than demonstrate her promise and stamina.

Irish Maxima (9-2) is unbeaten in two, a Parx sprint maiden and an allowance over six furlongs at Pimlico, when she broke the race apart with a fearsome display of front-running, drawing off to score by six and three-quarter lengths. The extra yardage may be manageable but this is a big step up in quality, which could make it hard for her to carry her speed.

The three Saratoga winners are probably the ones to concentrate on and EMERY, impressive over six furlongs on debut, is preferred now she stretches out.
