2023 Gallant Bloom Stakes & Woodward Stakes Recap

The 2023 Gallant Bloom Stakes and Woodward Stakes took place on Sunday afternoon rather than their original Saturday, September 30th slot due to the horrendous weather in the New York area.

Despite the delay, there was no shortage of drama, as Caramel Swirl won this year’s Gallant Bloom Stakes courtesy of a double disqualification. Looking on course to complete an easy victory, she was badly checked as she made her move at the furlong pole but saw her third place finish upgraded in the stewards room.

In the Woodward Stakes, Zandon was able to put an end to his long losing streak as he won his first race in his last eight starts to land his first prize since the 2022 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.

Gallant Bloom Stakes

  1. Caramel Swirl +100
  2. Sterling Silver +500
  3. Headland +800

Caramel Swirl won her second graded prize of 2023 as she was awarded this year’s Gallant Bloom Stakes in the steward’s room following a race packed full of incident.

The drama unfolded with just a furlong to run. Headland who had been leading the way since the off was starting to flag and was joined by both Caramel Swirl and Sterling Silver.

With Caramel Swirl trying to find a passage through the middle of the two runners, Sterling Silver jerked to her left and Headland moved to her right to cut off all the momentum that Caramel Swirl had generated.

The move forced Caramel Swirl into a practical stop. With her progress checked, she would only be able to finish back in a distant third.

With Caramel Swirl out of the way, Sterling Silver cruised to the line in first, with Headland following in second. Connections of Caramel Swirl would have felt hard done by, and after a seventeen-minute investigation, their agony would have turned to ecstasy as she was rightly awarded the victory.

Zandon finally overcame his long losing streak to win his first graded contest since May 2022.

Positioned as the favorite for this year’s Woodward Stakes, he got off to a slow start and found himself some way behind the early pace setter Film Star.

With Film Star trying to win the race from off the front, he had several of his rivals in a bind due to his relentless gallop.

Hitting the home straight with a two length lead, Zandon was finally able to set off in pursuit after being trapped for racing room.

As Film Star was starting to tire, Zandon found his groove and started to rapidly close. Overhauling the long time leader inside the final furlong, he pulled clear of the rest and would go onto win by five lengths.

Film Star did enough to finish second with Law Professor finishing fast to capture third.
