Breeders Cup Odds

Day One features three graded stakes contests and we’ll be focusing on two of those, the Grade 1 2023 Goodwood Cup over two miles for the stayers and the seven-furlong Grade 2 Lennox Stakes.

In the Grade 1 Goodwood Cup, Courage Mon Ami will be aiming to win his fifth straight and keep his unbeaten stretch running, while in the Grade 2 Lennox Stakes we’ll see the chalk Kinross try to get back to winning ways after he ended last season with a third in the 2022 Breeders Cup Turf Mile.

Goodwood Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $632,000 – 2 miles – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

We see the one-two from the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot lock horns again on the Sussex downs, with Courage Mon Ami 9/4 trying to confirm the form with the runner-up Coltrane 5/2.

The cutback in distance for the unbeaten Gosden runner is a question mark at this level, however, he ran out an easy winner of a handicap at Goodwood over 1 mile and six furlongs two back, so should have the required speed.

Coltrane was fourth in the 2022 Goodwood Cup when beaten five lengths behind the superstar stayer Kyprios and he meets nothing of that horse’s caliber on Tuesday.

He has finished in the first two on his last five starts, including when winning the 2023 Grade 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in May by nearly five lengths. Two miles is his optimum trip, which is why he is the early morning line chalk.

These two will not have things their own way as we have Eldar Eldarov 15/2 who won the 2022 Cazoo St Leger Stakes (final leg of the 2022 Triple Crown) over 1 mile 6 furlongs at Doncaster.

He came out with a strong seasonal debut to finish a fast closing second in the Grade 2 Yorkshire Cup at York in May before being well held in the Gold Cup at Ascot where he did not stay. There is plenty of upside in the cut back to two miles here.

Of the longshots, Quickthorn 11/1 must enter calculations. He is not quite the force of a year ago but he will be the one to make the pace as he did when winning last time, taking the Listed 2023 Ebor Grand Cup Stakes back in June.

He has plenty of back form on the card and ran up a hat-trick of wins last year, including winning the 2022 Grade 2 Prix Maurice De Neiul and then the 2022 Grade 2 Lonsdale Cup by fourteen lengths from Tuesday’s strong morning line fancy Coltrane.

2023 Goodwood Cup Odds & Prediction

A fantastic renewal and Courage Mon Ami looks sure to hit the board, but whether he can confirm form with Coltrane remains to be seen.

The vote goes to QUICKTHORN who looks a great play across the boards and he’ll dictate a strong pace on the speed and could get tactical advantage as they freewheel down the hill entering the stretch.

Eldar Eldarov is also a big player in an open contest.

Lennox Stakes

Grade 2 – Purse $227,500 – 7 furlongs – Turf – 3-Year-Olds and Up

A field of nine runners goes to post and it is the 2022 Breeders Cup Turf third Kinross 7/4 who is the chalk here under Frankie Dettori.

Before that Breeders’ Cup run, he had notched a four-timer, including winning the biggest race of his career when taking the 2022 Grade 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot over six furlongs, defeating seventeen other rivals.

He was beaten first time this season when looking in need of the run after a layoff but came back with a strong run at Newmarket in the 2023 Grade 1 July Cup Stakes over six furlongs. That was over six furlongs and this stretch out to his optimum distance rightly sees him as the chalk.

The three-year-old Isaac Shelby 5/1 is a very consistent horse, and although he has been beaten the last two times, he met traffic problems in both of those starts.

He started the campaign by winning the 2023 Grade 3 Greenham Stakes after finishing his two-year-old career by taking the 2022 Grade 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. As said, the last two have been unlucky, and he is a strong foe here up against the chalk.

Also on the shortlist are Al Suhail 6/1 and Audience 8/1, with the Godolphin runner the more fancied of the pair. He was one place ahead of Kinross in the 2023 Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and had also run well two back when third in the 2023 Grade 1 Al Quz Sprint at Meydan in March. He’s had a layoff before the run at Ascot and should be much sharper here.

Looking at the big prices on the morning line and Indestructible 14/1 should not be underestimated. He was just three-quarters of a length behind Issac Shelby at Royal Ascot and has since run another solid race to run fourth in the 2023 Grade 1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville in France. He still has some upside being lightly raced.

2023 Lennox Stakes Odds & Prediction

Both Kinross and Al Suhail look sure to run big races with Kinross returning to his best distance here, and he should hit the board.

The selection though, is the three-year-old ISAAC SHELBY who has met traffic problems on his two most recent starts and looks like appreciates the cutback in distance today.

Indestructible is a player at a price and Jumby could get involved if not doing his usual slow start from the gate.
