2023 Grey Stakes, Mazarine & Autumn Stakes Recap

Despite this weekend’s Breeders’ Cup, there were three top quality races that took place at Woodbine this weekend in the shape of the 2023 Grey Stakes, Mazarine and Autumn Stakes.

On Saturday, it was the Grey and Mazarine Stakes which took center stage.

First up was the Grey Stakes, where Two Ghosts was able to win the first graded prize of his career after narrowly missing out earlier in the year.

Concluding a brilliant day’s racing was the Mazarine Stakes, where Witwatersrand pulled off the upset to beat short priced favorite, Tripolina.

The Autumn Stakes headlined Sunday’s card. With just six runners, Wolfie’s Dynaghost produced a special performance to win from gate to wire.

  3. Jayhawk +1200

Two Ghosts notched a second career victory when emerging victorious in this year’s Grey Stakes.

Justin Stein produced a peach of a ride, guiding Two Ghosts expertly from last to first.

Heading up the home straight, it was Tunechi and Piper’s Factor who were matching strides and making their best way home.

However, Stein had clearly timed his charge right. Peeling Two Ghosts to the outside, the pair burnt up the final two furlongs and managed to hit the front with just fifty yards left to run.

Finishing like an express train, he breezed past his ailing opponents and secured his first ever graded victory.

With the race entering the business end, Husbands switched Witwatersrand from the inside rail to the outside and quickly powered to the front.

Despite the attentions of the unbeaten Tripolina, Witwatersrand proved she was in a class of her own as she cruised to the line to score the biggest win of her career.
