2023 Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes & Mac Diarmida Odds

Another top weekend of racing action awaits at Gulfstream with two fantastic races forming part of an action packed card, the G2 2023 Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes & Mac Diarmida.

In the Mac Diarmida thirteen horses have been declared for what looks to be a very competitive renewal. Ahead of the race the Tom Albertrani trained Astronaut will be making his first appearance of the season and will be hopeful of winning the third stakes race of his career.

Nine have been declared for the 2023 Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes with Charge It expected to start the race as the favorite. Representing the Todd Pletcher yard, he returned from a 218 day layoff to win in claiming company last time out and will be hopeful of landing the second Graded Stakes race of his career.

Despite not being a graded contest the Palm Beach Stakes should be an eagerly anticipated contest. XX horses have been declared for the contest with the expected favorite set to be the Xxxxx trained Xxxxxxx.

Mac Diarmida Stakes

Grade 2, 1 and 3/8s of a mile, Turf, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool: $200,000

Thirteen horses have been declared for this year’s Mac Diarmida Stakes and it’s expected to be an open renewal.

Heading into the race much of the pre race talk has focused around the Thomas Albertrani trained Astronaut. A horse that has experimented with an array of distances over the last few seasons, it seems that this trip is his preferred. Twice a Graded Stakes winner over this distance, connections will be hoping that he can get his head in front and capture a third victory.

Having been off the track since November 2022, other horses will arrive at the race fitter, but he certainly has proved he has the class to be victorious in a race of this nature.

When it comes to turf racing any horse that Chad Brown sends out has to be respected and Highest Honors will be hoping to make his mark on the field.

He was last seen back in November when he finished behind Astronaut in the Grade 2 Red Smith Stakes. He proved no match that day for Astronaut but will be hopeful of reversing the form here.

Michael Maker has three entered into the contest in the form of Bemma’s Boy, Value Engineering and Wicked Fast.

Maker’s best chance may sit with Bemma’s Boy who is a former winner at this level. The huge question mark surrounding him is how fit he is. Since 2020 he has been plagued by injury and has only run four times. He does seem to have turned a corner fitness wise and warmed up for this race with a fourth place finish in an Optional Claimer back in January. He has shown he has been capable at this level in the past and he could be a danger to all here.

Both Wicked Fast and Value Engineering both last run in the William L McKnight Stakes back in January. Although they didn’t win, they finished second and third respectively and will be hopeful of another big run here.

Abaan for Todd Pletcher ran in the same race as Wicked Fast and Value Engineering but could only manage to finish 9th, a winner at this level in the past he will be hopeful of a better run here.

The deep field on show for this year’s renewal of the Mac Diarmida Stakes will make for a fascinating race. Astronaut was mightily impressive in the Red Smith Stakes last time out and anything close to that level will make him tough to beat and he looks to be the one to be on here.

Gulfstream Park Mile

Grade 2, One mile, Dirt, open to horses aged four and over. Total prize pool $200,000

Nine horses have been declared for this year’s Gulf Stream Park Mile with the Todd Pletcher trained Charge It very much the horse to beat.

Pletcher’s charge is relatively lightly raced and has won three of his six career starts, he heads to Gulf Stream Park having been a dominant winner of the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes. He had previously finished second in the Curlin Florida Derby and he has the best form out of all nine runners.

Clearly big things are expected this year and Charge It warmed up nicely for this race with a cozy success in an Optional Claimer last month. He will start as the one they all need to beat.

A horse hoping to give Charge It plenty to think about is the Michael Maker trained Endorsed. Endorsed arrives at the race following two straight victories with his last race seeing him win at a Graded Stakes level for the first time. His comfortable victory in the Grade 3 Fred Hopper Stakes makes him a viable contender here.

The big race on Saturday’s card is the Fountain of Youth Stakes and in Simplification last year’s winner will be represented. Since his breakthrough victory, he has been winless in his last eight starts and his connections will be a hoping a drop into calmed waters could see him return to his best.

Whilst he has never won at this grade, Steal Sunshine has tasted success at Stakes level. A winner of three of his last five starts he will be hoping to bounce back from two disappointing efforts.

Hot on the heels of Endorsed in the Fred Hopper was Octane. Hailing from the Carlos David yard, he has won two of his last four starts and is capable of playing part in a race of this nature.

Dean Delivers and Noble Drama were also last seen in the Fred Hopper but both have plenty to prove here as they could only finish third and fourth in that race. Both have never placed at this level and will need to run career bests to have a say in proceedings.

If Charge It is as special as his legendary trainer thinks he is, then he should take all of the beating in this race. Whilst nine runners should make the race interesting it’s expected that Charge It should be able to win a race of this nature as he likes.
