2023 Gulfstream Turf Sprint & Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes

Ten runners are due to head to the post at 5.06 pm ET for this competitive Grade 3 stakes race for four-year-old and older sprinters in the Gulfstream Turf Sprint, and we’ll see if last year’s winner Yes I am Free can strike gold again. In a field of nine fillies and mares going to post at 3.08 pm ET on Saturday for the Ladies Turf Sprint at Gulfstream Park, we look in for a really competitive race.

Gulfstream Turf Sprint

Grade 3 – Purse $125,000 – 5 Furlongs -Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up

Yes, I Am Free should adopt a stalking role as he looks to become a double champion after taking this race last year when winning easily by more than three lengths.

Last year the horse used his customary early speed to get a stalking position before driving clear in the home stretch, and we can expect similar tactics again on Saturday. The seven-year-old won last time out so is clearly in good form.

The best recent Beyer figure of 96 was produced by My Pal Mattie last time and that was his second successive visit to the winner’s circle. He is coming here off a 120-day layoff, but the barn has a 19% strike rate with that stat and his latest drill over four furlongs showed he is ready to roll.

Belgrano has the best “last time out” Beyer figure of 99 and he won last time on the cutback after clearly not staying the mile two back. He is clearly better going one turn and has already beaten many of these foes, and could be the likely chalk here.

The one that could be of some value on the boards is Full Disclosure, who has been in top form in the lower class and now takes a step up the class ladder. He won a $25k optional claimer last time, and the interesting thing is that the three that finished behind him have won since. The only drawback is that he may need to be on speed to win, and has a very quick rival to his left.

Another interesting runner and one that is coming back from a layoff is the inside gate runner Rockcrest. He was only just beaten the last time he was seen, and that was over 6 furlongs, so the cut back to 5 furlongs looks to give plenty of upsides.

Many of these have already finished behind Belgrano, including Carotari, Shekky Shebaz, The Critical Way, and Classicstateofmind, so those four have work to do to grab a slice underneath.

Gulfstream Turf Sprint Prediction

A tough race to call with last year’s winner Yes I Am Free being high on the shortlist and if he can grab a stalking position behind My Pal Mattie and Full Disclosure, then he can certainly hit the board.

The main pick though is the 9-year-old veteran BELGRANO, who won when last seen in December and has a great race set up in which to close. Don’t expect to see him early, but he’ll be closing late and fast as they head to the wire.
My Pal Mattie, Rock Crest, and Full Disclosure should all be battling for a slice underneath.

Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes

Purse $100,000 – 5 Furlongs – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Up Fillies & Mares

Miss J McKay is likely to have too much class, and her electric finishing kick should see her go very close to winning this stakes race against a group she has already beaten easily.

Miss J McKay, Imagery, Stoney Point, and Mamba Wamba finished one, two, three, and four in a listed stake at the track back in December and there were just over two lengths between them.

Mamba Wamba who was fourth that day came from far back, so her effort can be marked up and she did a bullet four-furlong workout a couple of weeks back. As long as that workout has not taken too much out of her, she has to be shortlisted material to hit the board here if able to get closer to the speed.

Stoney Point was well positioned in that race throughout and although taking a bump in the home stretch as the long-time leader backed out of things, it was not enough to have affected the result and it will be tough for this one to turn around the form with the chalk.

Imagery had a tougher run-through on the rail and took a while to get a gap. She had every chance in the final furlong but had no answer to Miss J McKay late on.

The winner was good value for her win, and when jockey Tyler Gafallione pressed the button, she quickly put the result to bed.

Of the others here, two that look interesting are Charlie T and One Identity who are both in the top form lower down the class ladder but should be valued on the boards.

Charlie T hit the board in six of his seven starts last year, including three wins, while One Identity was a five-time winner from nine starts. She would be our pick of these two and her place showing last time on her stakes debut shows she is in top form for this tougher assignment.

War of Ages, Moor Strength, and Spun Glass look to be a little outclassed and will do well to grab a slice underneath.

Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes Prediction

A few in with chances here and Mamba Wamba can certainly hit the board if breaking a little quicker from the gate. She closed from a long way back last time and should be good enough to grab a share.

The form horse is MISS J MCKAY and she looks as though she will be tough to beat. As long as she does not encounter traffic problems, she looks to hold too much class for these rivals today.

Of the others, One Identity and Imagery look likely to be battling for a share of the purse, with the improving One Identity just preferred.
