2023 Hagyard Fayette Stakes & Bryan Station Stakes Recap

O’Connor dug in deep to land the biggest prize of his career since moving to the States when prevailing as the narrow winner of the 2023 Hagyard Fayette Stakes.

Elsewhere on Saturday’s Keeneland card was the Grade 3 Bryan Station Stakes. In what was another thrilling race, long-shot, Runaway Storm, was able to hold off the fast finishing Talk of the Nation to land this year’s renewal.

O’Connor was finally able to win his first graded prize since moving to America when prevailing as the narrow victor of this year’s Hagyard Fayette Stakes.

With most of the field happy to let Twilight Blue dictate the early fractions, many of the principles were happy to watch on from the middle of the pack.

The race came to life just before the home turn. With the pace upfront starting to collapse, the whole pack moved to within a couple of lengths of the fast fading Twilight Blue’s lead.

With Twilight Blue giving way, it left to three horses to battle it out for the finish, Speed Bias, Il Miracolo and O’Connor.

As the line loomed, still the battle was on. With it coming down to who wanted it the most, it was O’Connor who ultimately prevailed. Digging deep, he found an extra burst of speed deep inside the final furlong to win by a narrow head.

Needed to be separated by a photo, it was Il Miracolo who secured second with Speed Bias finishing third.

Runaway Storm pulled off a stunning upset as he emerged victorious in this year’s Bryan Station Stakes.

The pair of Smokey Mandate and Santorini were happy to lead the field along through the first few furlongs, but the race was on when favorite, Talk of the Nation, made his move as the leaders hit the far turn.

Recognizing Talk of the Nation’s move, Runaway Storm shifted through the gears to ensure he didn’t lose touch.

Eating up the ground at a ferocious rate, he quickly joined those at the head of affairs.

Santorini still held a slim lead, but Runaway Storm was chasing him down with every stride. Locked in battle, Talk of the Nation tried to respond having lost ground around the bend.

With the race well and truly on, Runaway Storm managed to find an extra burst of pace and in the shadows of the post had crept slightly ahead.

With the lead marginal, Talk of the Nation made one more late lunge but it wouldn’t be enough. As the runners crossed the line it looked like Runaway Storm had held on by the barest of margins. A photo was called, but it quickly confirmed that Runaway Storm had held on and with it scooped the biggest prize of his career to date.
