2023 Hong Kong Gold Cup Odds & Betting Tips

Golden Sixty looks to win his fourteenth race in seventeen starts as he looks to gun down the young pretender Romantic Warrior in what looks like a match race for the 2023 Hong Kong Gold Cup at Sha Tin

Hong Kong Gold Cup

Grade 1 – Purse $1,529,000 – 2000 meters (1 mile 2 furlongs) – Turf – 4-Year-Olds and Upwards

We have an elite field of just seven runners for this Grade 1 worth more than $1.5 million dollars, and it looks to rest between two of the most prolific horses in Hong Kong, Golden Sixty and Romantic Warrior.

These two are way clear of their rivals on ratings, so let’s look at the recent form to see which one might come out on top.

Golden Sixty has run three times this current season and last time was a highly impressive winner of the Stewards Cup when stalking the speed and then pouncing late after meeting some trouble in running. Romantic Warrior got first run that day, Golden Sixty was still plenty good enough and as they drove to the wire he widened to win by a length and a half.

This race has a different dynamic though as we stretch-out by another 400 meters (2 furlongs) and Romantic Warrior was closing late again at the wire after getting caught for speed when the winner quickened. It should be close between the top two on the boards.

Of the other five runners, we have a couple of strong closers here in Tourbillon Diamond and Glorious Dragon. The first named has been running in all of the top races in Hong Kong but has finished behind the two fancied runners already, and realistically can only hope for a slice underneath.

Glorious Dragon is a bit more interesting and was most definitely unlucky last time when finishing fourth. He was caught in a pocket when trying to make his run and only got clear daylight late in the race. He is a veteran but has a solid chance to grab a share underneath and could be a good play in the exotics.

Of the others, Kaying Star is the lowest-rated runner in the race and will be the likely speed here. He was not disgraced in the third spot last time, just in front of Glorious Dragon, and has a chance underneath.

The prolific Money Catcher was sixth in that same race and he’ll need to bounce back from that poor run, while the regular graded stakes performer Panfield might prefer more ground to cover.

This looks a two-horse race and is tough to call, Golden Sixty has the verdict last time out and has solid form over this 2000-meter (1 mile 2 furlong) distance, and without a doubt will finish in the top two and has a strong chance of his third win of the season.

However, both will be short odds and the narrow vote goes to ROMANTIC WARRIOR, who although beaten more than a length last time, looks to be the one who might just find more improvement for the stretch-out in distance.

It will be a bit of a coin toss to see who can grab a share of the purse underneath, but both Tourbillon Diamond and Glorious Dragon should be right in the mix.

The Hong Kong Classic Cup

Stakes – Purse $1,529,000 – 1800 meters (1 mile 1 furlong) – Turf – 4 Year-Olds

The highly progressive Voyage Bubble looks to bring up the hat trick with his “catch me if you can” tactics.

Fourteen go to the gate for this stakes event over 1800 meters and it looks like a wide-open affair, with these four-year-olds looking to secure the lion’s share of this $1.5 million purse.

Keefy is the top-rated horse in the field so is likely to be well-fancied. He has been progressive but was well held in this spot last time, and the stretch-out in distance does not exactly scream upside so might be one to swerve at a short price on the boards.

The rest of the field is pretty closely matched on official ratings and second in is Voyage Bubble who went gate-to-wire last time to beat several of today’s foes. He has won his last two from the speed and both have came over 1600 meters (1 mile), and today he stretches out by 200 meters (1 furlong) and that asks for more from this son of Deep Field.

Tuchel finished second in that race and was always in a good position, but could not get to the winner. All of his winning form has been over 1400 meters (7 furlongs) so there is a question mark over the extended distance.

The one to take out of the race is Galaxy Witness who bobbled at the gate and was way back early. He was still ten lengths from the speed turning into the home stretch and also had to tip into the five-lane to make his run. He closed nicely to the wire and this has been his run style on the last five starts. This will be the first time he goes at 1800 meters (1 mile 1 furlong) and he could be the one most likely to benefit from the stretch-out.

Sweet Encounter won very easily over this distance three back and is sure to enjoy the stretch-out after two poor runs over shorter, while Super Sunny Sing has to be of interest in stepping up the class ladder after securing the hat-trick last time. He is a strong closer and gets extra ground to cover and could be one to include in exotics.

Of the others, Encountered is a progressive individual and we should not discount the only filly in the race Bon’s A Pearla who gets a 4lb weight allowance from the boys and should show more now stretching out in distance.

Plenty in with chances, and based on the ratings and current form, then Voyage Bubble, who is the likely chalk, looks sure to hit the board. He’ll aim to control the speed and quicken entering the home stretch.

That race Voyage Bubble won likely holds the key, and the horse we like at bigger odds is GALAXY WITNESS. He is a strong closer and finally gets a chance to show he has the class for this with the stretch-out giving plenty of upside.

Tuchel, Sweet Encounter, and Encountered should all be there at the wire fighting for a slice underneath.
