2023 Irish Oaks & Curragh Cup Odds and Picks

This Saturday see’s three top class races being held at one of Ireland’s premier racetracks, the Curragh. Headlined by the Group 1 2023 Irish Oaks, Aidan O’Brien is looking for his seventh victory in the race and trains the favorite for this year’s contest Savethelastdance.

Breeders Cup Odds

A good winner of the 2023 Cheshire Oaks, she ran a great race when finishing second in the 2023 Oaks. She will be hoping to win her first Group 1 this weekend.

Supporting the 2023 Irish Oaks are two Group 2 contests – the Sapphire Stakes and Curragh Cup.

In this year’s Sapphire, Ladies Church for Jonny Murtagh will be looking to win this race for the second successive year and will hope to replicate the form she showed last time out in the 2023 Sole Power Sprint Stakes where she wound up on top comfortably.

In the Curragh Cup, Aidan O’Brien will be hoping to cap off a special Saturday with Emily Dickinson. A Group 3 winner back in 2022, she will be hoping to run a better race than when finishing fourth in the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup when last seen.

Irish Oaks

Group 1, Turf, 1 mile and four furlongs, open to three-year-old fillies. Total prize pool: €500,000

The Irish Oaks is one of the standout races on the Irish racing calendar and this year is no exception, as a high-quality field of eight head down to post for this year’s renewal.

Aiden O’Brien has a brilliant record in the race and will be hoping for a seventh success with 2023 Oaks runner up Savethelastdance. With two wins from her four career starts, she bounced to prominence with a dominating performance in the 2023 Cheshire Oaks. Positioned as the favorite for the 2023 Oaks, she didn’t look to handle the unique Epsom track and back on more standard going, she could take all the beating here.

As is often the way in Irish races of this nature, O’Brien has a strong hand and saddles three other horses Library, Be Happy and Warm Heart. Of the three Warm Heart looks the most likely to threaten the favorite.

A winner of her last three starts, she has improved with each run and produced one of the best performances of Royal Ascot when running out as a solid winner of the 2023 Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes.

Joseph O’Brien has trained Group winners all over the world and will be hoping to land another prestigious prize with his sole runner Lumiere Rock. More experienced than most in this contest, she was a Group 3 winner when victorious in the 2022 Staffordstown Stud Stakes.

Dermot Weld is one of the most successful flat trainers in history and has won this race twice. Looking to complete a trio of victories, he saddles Azazat. She doesn’t boast the form of some of the others in the race and will need to run a better race than her previous graded appearance that saw her finish second in the 2023 Darly Munster Oaks.

Rounding out this year’s Oaks field are Comhra and British raider Bluestocking. Offering some value, Bluestocking has finished behind Warm Heart in her last two starts but will be hoping to reverse that form at the third time of asking.

2023 Irish Oaks Odds & Betting Pick

By virtue of training over half the field, it’s hard to look past Aidan O’Brien winning this race for the seventh time. Despite Savethelastdance’s second in the Oaks, Warm Heart is clearly thriving and at a decent price she could be the value angle of the contest.

Sapphire Stakes

Group 2, Turf, five furlongs, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool: €120,000

The Group action on Saturday kicks off with the Sapphire Stakes. A five-furlong dash to the line, the favorite for this year’s race looks set to be the Jonny Murtagh trained Ladies Church.

The winner of this race twelve months ago, this once again looks to have been his main aim for the summer. He is bound to be a popular selection following her victory last time out in the Sole Power Listed Stakes.

Two horses have made the trip across the Irish Sea for this race and the British challenge looks set to be spearheaded by the Tim Easterby trained Art Power. A real speedball of a horse, he is winless in her last two starts but produced one of the best results of his career when victorious in the 2023 Group 2 Greenland Stakes. Look for him to hit the front early and make the race a real stamina test.

Rounding out the British challenge is White Lavender. Having done most of his racing in France, he could be one of the best value options of the contest having won last time out in the Group 3 Prix de Saint Georges.

Colin Keane has long been regarded as one of the best jockeys in Ireland and whatever horse he rides must be respected. On board the winner in two of the last three renewals, he will take the ride of Go Athletico who looks to have a strong chance. A winner of his last two starts including a nice victory last time out in Listed company, he will be looking to take the step up to Group company in his stride.

Moss Tucker is another Listed winner having tasted success in the 2023 Woodlands Stakes. Winless in his last two starts, he has finished behind both Ladies Church and Art Power in both of those races and arrives with something to prove.

Joseph O’Brien has never won this race as either a jockey or trainer but will be wanting to set that record right here. He saddles Maria Branwell in this year’s race who is looking for her first win in her last ten starts. Not boasting the form of others in the race, it looks like she will need something special to come out on top.

Lady Tilbury is one of the youngest horses in the race and she heads into the race having won last time out. Having never competed at this level, it will be interesting to see how she handles the step up in class.

Sapphire Stakes Odds & Betting Prediction

An open renewal of the Sapphire Stakes awaits, but Jonny Murtagh will have high hopes that his mount Ladies Church can win this race for the second time.

Curragh Cup

Group 2, Turf, 1 mile and six furlongs, open to horses three and over. Total prize pool: €150,000

The Curragh Cup rounds out the graded action on Saturday’s packed card. Eleven runners will head down to post with Aidan O’Brien looking to cap off the day with yet another graded prize.

His charge Emily Dickinson is likely to start as the favorite. Winless in her last two starts, she was one of the leading fancies heading into the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup but saw her challenge fade in the final furlong.

A dominant winner of the 2023 Vintage Stakes, if she can produce that level of performance, she could be tough to pass.

Looking to keep Emily Dickinson company will be her stablemate Gooloogong. Likely to start as a double figure price, she could be the pace angle of the contest in the hope that she sets up the race for her more illustrious stablemate.

Joseph O’Brien has trained the winner of this race twice and heads into this year’s renewal with two fancies.

His best opportunity looks to sit with Okita Soushi. A winner of three of his last four starts, he produced the best performance of his career when winning the 2023 Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot. A narrow winner that day, he could represent the best value of the race.

Paddy Twomey is one of Ireland’s most promising trainers and Rosscarbery will hope to land the race for his trainer for the first time. A good winner of the 2023 Darly Munster Oaks, she found life tough last time out in the 2023 Pretty Polly Stakes. Back in calmer waters here, she is certainly capable of winning this year’s race.

Jessie Harrington has long been renowned as the Queen of Irish racing, and she saddles Yashin. With three wins in his nine career starts, he holds a formidable strike rate and heads into the race following a good win last time out in the Group 3 Levmoss Stakes. Thriving, he could be another player at a decent price.

Curragh Cup Odds & Betting Pick

A wide open contest awaits in this year’s Curragh Cup. Emily Dickinson is likely to be popular but at a decent price Rosscarbery looks a real contender. A Group 3 winner, his run in the Pretty Polly Stakes was respectable and he can certainly threaten.
