2023 Juddmonte International Odds & Betting Predictions

Two huge A-listers light up the first day of the York Ebor meeting on Wednesday, when the marquee G1 2023 Juddmonte International features a mouthwatering clash between four-time G1 hero Paddington and romping Royal Ascot G1 winner Mostahdaf. The supporting G2 Great Voltigeur gives the unbeaten Gregory an opportunity to continue on the upgrade against solid stayers Continuous and Castle Way.

The showpiece contest at York’s hugely prestigious Ebor meeting comes straight out of the gate on the first day, and although there are only four runners in the seven-figure Juddmonte International on Wednesday, the big two are arguably the best at this distance in Europe.

It is a match, really, and the heavy chalk is the incredible Paddington, who is riding a seven-race winning streak that includes four G1 wins. The Irish three-year-old was a comfortable winner of the 2023 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and the 2023 St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot, both over a mile, and hit his peak when stepped up to ten furlongs in the 2023 Coral Eclipse at Sandown, when he beat older horses for the first time.

He showed talent and toughness in equal measure when turning back multiple G1 winner Emily Upjohn by a half-length, and did not need to be at his best last time to win the 2023 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood back over a mile in the mud.

A potential downside may be his schedule – this is his fifth race in less than three months – but he appears to be thriving on the workload and is comfortable on the pace or just behind it, a positive in what could be a very tactical contest.

His big rival is the five-year-old Mostahdaf, who has moved right up this year from G3 level to G1 standard. The key to his improvement has been more time between his races – he won a G3 in Saudi Arabia by seven lengths off a five-month layoff and ran his rivals out of town in a tremendous display at Royal Ascot off a three-month break.

That victory in the ten-furlong 2023 G1 Prince of Wales’s was something special. He cruised from back to front and drew off through the final furlong to beat solid G1 runner Luxembourg by four lengths, a runaway career-best performance.

Mostahdaf has had two months on the bench since then to recharge his batteries, which should be sufficient, and he will get a stalking trip behind the favourite. He stays a mile and a half well so will be doing plenty late.

His barnmate Nashwa has been a little in-and-out this year, brilliant when taking the 2023 G1 Falmouth at Newmarket over a mile by five lengths, less impressive over today’s distance on her other three starts. She has never taken on males before and does not have the quality of the big two.

Neither does The Foxes , who won the 2023 G2 Dante over course and distance in May before running out of gas in the 2023 G1 Derby at Epsom. This is his distance, as he showed when runner-up in the ten-furlong 2023 G1 Belmont Derby in New York last time, but that form does not stack up well enough here.

This is a thrilling heavyweight brawl, but no-one has laid a glove on PADDINGTON for a long time and he can see off Mostahdaf and go eight straight.

The two mega-trainers who dominate the Juddmonte International also have an iron grip on the supporting Great Voltigeur, but here it is vice versa as John Gosden has the market leader and Aidan O’Brien sends the main threat to the favourite, and their colts come from very different backgrounds.

Gosden saddles the unbeaten Gregory, three-for-three in a career that only began at the end of April and has gone places fast – novice win, stakes win, and then a leap in class and distance for the 2023 G2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot over a mile and three-quarters.

He led practically all the way there and had plenty up his sleeve for the closing stages, and given his inexperience there is likely to be further improvement in store. The cutback should not be an issue – York is a big galloping track with a long home straight, set up for stamina – and Gregory will probably push the pace again.

O’Brien’s sole contender, from five possibles at the entry stage, is Continuous , who is zero-for-three in 2023 after winning a G3 over a mile in France as a two-year-old.

He has improved for going up in distance, and ran a career-best last time when runner-up in the 2023 G2 King Edward VII at Royal Ascot over a mile and a half. He got a bit of rough treatment from the winner but was clear second-best, with Artistic Star two and a half lengths back in third.

The winner that day, King Of Steel, would be a clear favourite if running here – it is better basic form than Gregory can claim and Continuous gets a 3lb concession from the favourite. There may not be much between them.

Godolphin runner Castle Way is bidding for a four-timer after smoothly climbing the ladder, handicap, stakes and then last time his Group-race breakthrough in the 2023 G3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket over a mile and three-quarters.

He relished stretching out for the first time and showed plenty of willing to get the job done by a head, and he could move up again for that, but his barn is a long way short of its usual dominance this year – all its big names have been off the pace – and that is a major negative for his chance.

Canberra Legend should appreciate the faster turf after finishing third in the 2023 G3 Gordon at Goodwood over a mile and a half in the mud, when Artistic Star was a length and a quarter behind in fourth, but both these horses are fully exposed and seem short of the quality required.

The unbeaten GREGORY has scope for considerable improvement and his talent for front-running could be the key to stretching his winning streak to four.
